The Baseball Thread.....

yeah, they bludgeoned their way through the tournament. Those kids can hit.

Honestly, it was the best baseball I've seen in a long time. There were a lot of games throughout the tournament where no team really lost. A walk, a productive out, and a hit on a pitcher's pitch could have been the difference. MLB could learn a lot from those kids.

...I was glad to see Pennsylvania get knocked out...I couldnt stand all the hype they were getting...

a Pennsylvania team of kids makes it to a true world tournament held in-state, and you're happy for their "failure" because of a little news coverage.

...its not the kids, its how everyone coming to see them was getting all this credit, even though they lived around the block...if possible, just about every team would have that much support, but its not possible, and I grew tired of them talking about the support for Pennsylvania...

...also, I dont mind paying to get into Pennsylvania...its having to pay to get into Delaware that bugs me...thats like paying a prostitute $3, and then having to be in Delaware...

It all comes down to today!

So, who's getting in?

Red Sox?

Rays?

Cards?

Who would have thought it would come down to game 162?

This is awesome.

...I'd like to see the braves loose for several reasons...1) I hate the braves, and b) I'd like to see the Phightins get 102 wins...however, I dont think it would be good if the braves lost...I can only imagine the devastation Dan Uggla's roid rage would cause if they missed the playoffs...

I see the Braves winning tonight as much as it pains me to type that. It would be nice to see the Phils win a club record 102, but they're sending a guy who hasn't pitched more than 2 innings since May against the Braves' ace. On paper it looks like a Braves win but you never know, they're slumping and the Phils are getting hot. Cards win tonight, force a playoff in STL. Rays win and make things real interesting...

i think it's gonna go to 163 in both leagues. also, Ryan Braun will win the batting title because Mets manager Terry Collins pulled Jose Reyes after one at bat, and Braun only has to go 3-4 tonight to win the title. I say "only" because that is entirely plausible. give Reyes another hit and Braun would have had to go 4-5 or 5-5, which is significantly more difficult.

^^

I agree - extra game in both leagues....though Atlanta is sucking almost as bad as the Rockies right now so I really don't want them in the playoffs.

Speaking of sucking - if the Rocks lose today (highly probable) they will end the season losing 12 of their last 14 games and aside from a hot start in April were one of the worst teams in baseball this year. They under performed even when all the 'pieces' were healthy.

And how does ownership and upper management respond? They released info yesterday that the entire coaching staff will be retained. WTF? Unless they intend to make an intelligent splash in the free agent market they are toast for next year already....

they may realize that this team, even with some free agent signings, simply doesn't have the ability to win next year. so why blow the whole thing up if it's not going to matter? the real question is, what are they doing to improve the minor league system?

Well - that was the 'big idea' behind the Jimenez trade. They got four quality minor league players. They have some trade bait in Rosario right now since he would not be an upgrade over Ianetta at catcher (better offense, worse defense). Their stated goals are to get a quality starting pitcher, a starting third baseman, and/or another outfielder. Until they made the trade the minor league pitching was a trainwreck.....

if that's the "big idea" then the GM needs to be fired and ownership needs to blow the entire thing up. start over with a GM who knows what they're doing and will rebuild the system from the ground up.

i just finished watching the last Mets game of the season. after the last game of last season, the announcers all said that the organization lacked direction top to bottom and there needed to be a "Mets way" other than losing. old GM was fired, new GM (who actually knows how to run a team) was brought in, and lo and behold, there was a "Mets way" this season. they still weren't very good, but they played hard. last year they just gave up. so it was a marked change. and the announcers noted that in their closing remarks today. so a lost year, but one to build on. this doesn't mean they'll be contenders next year but if they keep on keepin' on, maybe '13 or '14 could see a Wild Card race.

The Rockies GM and coach are both in the last year of their contracts. The GM owned up a couple weeks ago to weak signings and continually hoping to get revived 'b' level players on the cheap. They will have about $20 million + leaving the payroll this year (Aaron Cook gone, Helton contract restructure) so they have the cash to get a couple impact players. My guess is that they have until July.

In 2009 they won 92 games and made the playoffs.
In 2010 they won 83, but lost 13 of their last 14 games.
In 2011 they will win either 72 or 73 games (they are winning 3 -0 right now...).

That does not appear to me to be a team on the way up or any indication what so ever that they are heading in a positive direction....

Then the GM needs to forget about the MLB team and focus on next years draft.

He has not proven to be very astute in the draft to date.....

Ownership has to eat his contract and get him out of there then. the problem is finding a suitable replacement. there's a lot of asshats out there running teams. you don't have to look any further than the NL West for a plethora of them.

Agreed......but the owners are pretty low key and it will take at least one more train wreck for them to do anything.

Sad but true.
