ok, i looked it up on MLB Trade Rumors which last reported on Ramirez before the trade deadline. he has a $16 million team option for 2012 or a $2 million buyout. If the team declines the option, he projects as a Type B free agent, which means the Cubs would receive a compensatory draft pick for letting him go.
looking at his contract and his numbers over the past 4 seasons, there's no way they should pick up the option even if they want him back. the Cubs paid him $16 million last year and he wasn't even a replacement level player, posting a -1.9 WAR. this year he could be a 2.5 WAR player, which is improvement, but not worth $16 million. they should decline the contract, offer him $8 million and if he walks, then fine, they get a draft pick.
