17 below .500... progress!

It's like Dave said though, I totally didbn't expect them to be good, not as bad as they have been but I certainly didn't expect them to contend. The Sox are another story, all the experts picked them to win the division so their failure makes me happy.

Why would the Rockies worry about winning when they get 35,000 idiots to show up every night to watch shit baseball?

Its hard to blame the owners when they are just making piles of dough emulating the Cubs model (why win when dumbasses just show up to get drunk anyway?)...the fans here are dumb.

True - but the owners have been upping the payroll. Given that the fans continue to show up for a mediocre team we will see what the off season has to bring. The Rocks got burned badly last year trying yet another salvage job (Jose Lopez) and Wiggington is playing way more than he was supposed to due to Ian Stewart being inept. The Rockies have been pretty good over the last few years at not throwing a wad of money at over rated free agents (see Jason Werth) but they need a third baseman and a third solid outfielder badly so the owners need to parlay the good attendance into a couple quality off season pickups.

If they play next year like they are right now the attendance will drop 5,000 to 10,000 a game. Still - bad baseball is better to watch than no baseball.

as i've learned from the Mets this year, it takes a front office with an eye not just for talent but for development, and a strong field manager. if Jerry Manuel were still managing the Mets instead of Terry Collins, they'd be challenging the Astros for worst team in the league. instead, they're hovering around .500 after trading Beltran, losing Reyes for a few weeks (and now a few more weeks), and continuing the scrub parade from the minors due to injuries. these guys play their asses off. they suck, but they play their asses off. there's something to be said for that.

Maybe you can get Aramis Ramirez because it's looking like the Cubs aren't going to re-sign him next year.

And this is what is lacking with the Rockies right now. Current pitching crisis not withstanding, they had the talent 'on paper' this season to challenge the Giants for the division title. Instead they are tied with the Dodgers for fourth in the division - and sinking fast. No urgency in their play. Talented players not playing 100% (Ian Stewart, Dexter Fowler - though Fowler is now looking good now that the season is in the toilet). And now they have to promote pitcher who are getting lit up at the AAA level because they have no talent in the farm system ready to play. Hopefully the guys they got from Cleveland will pan out because their own draft pics have pretty much sucked over the past five or so years. Except Rex Brothers. He is a badass who just needs a bit more time to become maybe their closer of the future...

He is going want way more cash then the Rockies will be willing to pay. This is a team that had Lance Berkman wanting to play for them this year and then low balled him with the offer.

This makes me even CRAZIER though...we are willing to pay talent that isnt talented becasue the Rockies SUCK at talent evaluation...our farm system is a wasteland do to poor management and over-evaluation of talent.

Every fucking team in the NL West (a weak ass division) has won the division at least TWICE in the last 10 years and we have NEVER won it. I'm tired of just being happy to have a team. We've had a team for nearly 20 years and outside of one fluky ass 21 game winning streak that propelled us into a World Series we havent done SHIT. I'm tired of sucking ass.

How in the the hell do you think I feel??

To get prospects they would have had to trade him but he has a no trade clause.

by not re-signing him, unless he has a clause where they cannot offer him arbitration, the Cubs get a compensatory draft pick when Ramirez signs elsewere. they can then take the money they're saving on Ramirez, and instead of spending it on another high priced free agent, they can spend it on improving their farm system.

Yep. O'Dowd (Rockies GM) pretty much said that verbatim in the interview. If you look at their #1 draft picks over the past ten years or so only two have panned out. Tulo and Jeff Francis. I mean Chris Nelson was a #1 pick (top 10 overall) and he is a marginal at best on the big league level. Ian Stewart still has people salivating over his raw talent, but the dude has no work ethic at all. he is one of those players who should have been traded last year but they were in love with the potential so they kept him too long. Now they won't get jack for him. Fowler is the same. He flashes the potential a bit (more often than Stewart) and the Rocks keep him around. Then he goes back into the toilet. Eric Young Jr has no business playing on the major league level with the ineptness he shows in the field. Unless you can hit like Ryan Braun that is. And EY isn't even close to that. And yet the Rocks are starting him.....

Lets put is this way......since their brilliant start to the season (12-3) the Rockies are 40-59. And they have now lost 16 straight Sunday games. Sixteen in a row!!

the draft is such a crapshoot. even the first round. that's why having as many picks as possible is the key to success at the major league level.

Very true - but the Rockies are under average at picking top talent. The owner and GM admit it in one breath, then in the next say that the current scouting team will remain in place.

I just saw a little blurb on a Rockies blog stating that the Rocks might be interested in Kevin Millwood since Boston has no need for him. He is nothing to get excited about but he is better than anyone they could bring up into their rotation from their farm system.

Kevin Millwood? really? wow.

maybe they should go see Moneyball. maybe after that they should read the book.

Not a trade. Millwood was released from the Red Sox AAA team at his request. Sign him as a fill in to finish out the year in the #5 spot in the rotation at around the league minimum.
