The Baseball Thread.....

he's not even worth league minimum for September.

He is better than anyone the Rockies have at AAA to take Nicasio's spot in the roster. They pulled up Greg Reynolds, another former Rockies #1 pick for the #5 spot in the rotation. His ERA at AAA is 6.58. At least he doesn't walk a ton of batters (2.3 BB/9).

even still. you're 3 weeks away from September callups. at 9 games under .500, the season is effectively over. call a couple of guys up now and do what you can. somebody might surprise you. make better trades in the offseason and draft better. it's not a win-now plan, but it's a plan that has to be stuck to.

a baseball thread. frickin' awesome. cards took care of business in florida. go cards!!!!!!!!!!!

The last place Astros traded away their top 2 players, Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn, for minor league players. Good thing I like the Phillies.

Looks like the Astros are on their way to AAA!

they're in the middle of an ownership change and the GM was ordered to trade for prospects. which he did. kinda.

They won't be any kind of contender for a while. New owners are trashing the astros. Ok with me. Leaves the Cards with Cincy and Milwaukee to play with for the central title.

The only bright spot is that the Astros are on their way to getting the first draft pick. Not that there's anyone available to single-handedly turn the team around, but it's something.

Of course, with their luck, the Astros will manange to win enough games to piss away even that opportunity.

I agree.

But the Rockies didn't. They signed Millwood and he is starting tomorrow in Cincinnati. Apparently they feel their AAA starting pitching is not major league quality arms and the talented guys at AA continue to get pounded.

well, hopefully the "make better trades and draft well" thing can still happen.

So where do you think Reyes is going next year, and what will he get paid? His bum leg definitely has to be hurting his value a little, but he'll still get a ridiculous contract somewhere.

too early to say. it's really going to be determined by how healthy he is in September. if i'm the Mets, i'm offering him 5 years, $15 million per year guaranteed, because he's an icon here. i would then add performance incentives to $22 million for games played, at-bats, steals, OBP, and to give him an additional kick in the pants, fielding percentage.

One can hope. Millwood is just a stop gap for the rest of the season unless he is utterly awful in his first few starts. The Rocks still have not signed thrir first round pick from this year.

That is overpaying for a guy with a long injury history, but I know if the Mets don't offer that someone else will. But given that he is the face of the franchise right now that is probably a good guess on the offer.

yeah, it's overpaying. but the Mets with him draw significantly more than the Mets without him. he's actually worth more to the Mets on the DL than he is letting go. also, letting him walk would dredge up the spirit of Donald Grant and the Tom Seaver debacle. Wilpon knows it, Alderson knows it, the fans know it, and the media is all too happy to remind everybody on a daily basis. in this case, it's not a matter of Reyes playing for a "hometown discount". it's that the Mets should be rewarding him for playing all these years on shitty teams with no depth and unreasonable expectations. and then they should incentivize him to stay healthy.

if i were any other team, i wouldn't offer him more than $10 million a year for 4 years guaranteed. i'm sure some other offer that is Werth/Zito-like in money will come forward though.

Yeah. The Nationals or the Giants would love a shot at signing him. Maybe not the Nationals because he is actually a great player. They usually just pay ridiculous cash for good players. And if Jeter retires at the end of the season........

Jeter's stats are almost identical to where he was last year. there's no way he's retiring unless something drastic happens. Jorge Posada OTOH...

also, the Mets know that if Reyes goes to the Yankees or anywhere in the Eastern Division of either league, fans will leave in droves.

by not re-signing him, unless he has a clause where they cannot offer him arbitration, the Cubs get a compensatory draft pick when Ramirez signs elsewere. they can then take the money they're saving on Ramirez, and instead of spending it on another high priced free agent, they can spend it on improving their farm system.

I don't think so, his contract is up, he's not arbitration eligble or a restricted free agent. If they don't sign him he has nothing to do with the Cubs anymore.

OK - Jeter is only 37. I thought he was older for some reason. Same age as Todd Helton and he plans to play two more seasons. Unfortunate, Helton looks to finish up with around 2500 hits so probably no HOF for him - but it will be close. Jeter is a first ballot shoe in. Posada has played one season too many.

There's usually a grace period where the team can offer arbitration to a free agent. If the player declines arbitration and signs with another team, the original team gets a compensatory draft pick.

This was why other was so important for the Mets to move Beltran. His contract stipulated the Mets could not offer arbitration at the end of the contract, so no draft pick could be awarded if he walked.
