Depends on what you mean by "assistance". Perhaps one of the barrier islands -- like Long Beach Island from my pics -- because there's only one bridge in/out, have seen little help because you can't get to it. That's not placing blame, it's just a reality of the geography that it's hard to get to.

I heard parts of a story that about 20 churches in the Coney Island area where people have boarded themselves up inside to protect themselves from roving gangs of youths.

Wish I heard more of it. Only got parts.

We have friends what are going to be able to go back into their neighborhood today. they are waiting to find out if the house is still standing

Lots of familiar sights and pics. My heart goes out to you guys in the affected areas.

I've heard that, due to a lack of routine law enforcement, drivers are running stop lights, signs, etc. The cops are too busy assisting recovery efforts. Same thing happened down here after Katrina. Problem is, folks never went back to their Pre-K driving habits. Crappy drivers everywhere down here now. I hope that doesn't happen up there.

Law enforcement is definitely doing all they can. Red Cross, National Guard, and every other emergency group is out and functioning. There's simply not enough people to help all of those affected, in part because of transportation. I was essentially stuck in my corner of the world until today. Now that mass transit is coming on-line and cars are allowed (with 3 or more people) on the bridges, you'll see a greater effort this weekend and in the coming weeks. Another key factor is that ships are now being allowed into NY harbor, especially fuel tankers. This entire region is without gasoline and you can only do so much on an empty tank.

The sight-seeers will run out first. I have no compassion for them. They just make it harder for recovery.

Best of luck to you guys.

there are no sight seers. the roads are congested, the gas stations are out of gas, and half the area has no power. people are either working, helping, or staying home. those looting are doing it in the areas they live in.

spotty. better in the City than the outlying areas. if you don't have power, you don't have cell service. if you do have power, you might have cell service. i have both, and i'm considering myself very lucky.

Cell towers have battery backups. They're only good for so long, then offline till the power comes back.

Many homeowners are about to go through hell with their insurance companies. Wind-driven water wasn't covered under flood protection. They're well-rehearsed and ready to do battle. It'll be interesting to see how they try to wiggle out of covering those homes that burned.

Jeez, now folks are reduced to dumpster diving. Where's the Red Cross?

well, my sister works for the Red Cross on Long Island. Here was her last Facebook update:

Static feeding centers will be open tomorrow across Long Island for those without other resources. Spread the word to those in need. Lunch will start feeding at 11 am and dinner at 4pm. Mobile medical unit rolled into Locust Valley this afternoon courtesy of Heart to Heart Org. Looking for RN's and MD's to volunteer their time at unit.
