Living in the disaster zone...
Hi folks...still alive, in case you were wondering...
Lost power 4
0 monday afternoon...instead of the usual flash and gone it was a 30 second long fade to black...KNOWING that we were going to be basicaaly screwed we started conserving generator fuel immediately...we are fortunate enough to have a permanently installed 10KW generator, runs on propane...
...amd we are good for about 60 hours on it...by careful rationing I figured I could stretch it out for almost a week...luckily that wasn't necessary...power was rstored after about 33 hours, which sounds like a long time until you consider that some of the people I work with won't have power restored until next week...we were fortunate...
This is why the power was out...
...those lines are down sporadically for the entire 15 mile length of that road...
Damage wise we were also very lucky, with just some widow makers in the front tree...
...amd some on the ground...
...that came from here...
...and some shit to clean up out back...
A lot of trees around here look like this...
...but one of my neigbor's really got creamed...
...willow trees don't like hurricanes...he's across the street from me, about 3 houses up...
Now, however we have added a new twist...gasoline shortages...
...apparently the warex terminal in Jersey is under water/out of power/destroyed (depending who you ask) and there's nothing being delivered to the entire tri-state area...the panic set in earlier this afternoon...lots of long lines, fights, "no gas" signs...my sister works for the county and let us know last night so the vehicles and cans are all full...they expect shipments to restart by early next week...at work we have enough tanks full to get through tomorrow, but after that who knows...
Anyway...I'm safe and sound...kinda stressed, but OK...I'm aware that we could have gotten it a whole lot worse, and am very grateful...I have seen pics and film of the devastation in Jersey and NYC...I remain glad I liver where I do...
Peace
david
