Northeasterners: What say you of this Mother of all Storms approaching?

The gas shortage brings back memories of our big storm over the summer that knocked out power to about 75% of the state. Most gas stations had no power. The ones that did quickly ran out of gas.

We were fairly lucky then. Our power went out on Friday and came back on sometime Monday. Lots of folks, my parents included, were out of power for two weeks. Lino was out for 10 days.

And it was the middle of summer, so temps and humidity were in the upper 80s.

Wow, NY dark. That is a really surreal kind of thing. I can't imagine what it must be like being there.

Here in the country we have some definite advantages when stuff like this happens. In the city you just can't afford the space to be more prepared for stuff like this in a 600X800 apartment.

Much Mojo to you guys. Hope you stay warm and safe.

one of the managers in my office lives in the W. 20s on the 18th floor. no power likely until tomorrow. she's been huffing up and down all 18 flights for clothes and whatnot, showering at the gym, and staying with relatives in other locations in Manhattan that do have power.

while Manhattan is bad, i've now been seeing the devastation on Staten Island and Long Island. I've long said that Staten should be annexed by Jersey as a joke, but their situation is actually closer to Jersey than the rest of the City. all those devastating pics you've seen of NJ are mirrored on Staten Island. the death toll is only going to rise into the hundreds, and that may be in Staten alone. Long Island is much bigger and the situation there ranges from the total destruction like Psychotronics LBI pics, to downed power lines and trees like seen from Jello. so the people with larger places seem to be worse off than those in studio apartments in Chelsea or the Lower East Side.

best to everybody. this is going to make for a very difficult Thanksgiving.

I wish I was surprised by that. Just another example of the entitlement society that we've created over the past generation. Things like this storm will show a man's real character -- every man for himself vs. helping out whomever you can because it's the right thing to do. I choose the latter.

I hate to break it to you, but looting has been around for a long time. Certainly longer than a generation.

just realized my classical was at the music school. all told i'm estimating i lost more than $1000 worth of equipment, including a pedal that's stuck at the post office down the block from there. a drop in the bucket compared to most around here though.

That sucks. I guess you don't know if the owner's insurance is gonna cover any of that at this point?

honestly, it could all be up on the highest shelf and at worst have some mold. but since the store had a minimum of 5 feet of water in it, i'm not expecting that to be the case. there's still no power down there and the sewage plant a few blocks away was put out of commission by the storm, so the entire area stinks. my friend who owns the store hasn't been there yet, as he's been dealing with damage to his house. the train line that goes there is out of commission. i could walk from another line that goes near there, but i'll wait until there's any kind of effort to actually get into the store.

as for insurance, it's a toss up on whether he had flood insurance. i'm not betting on it, so yeah, it's probably not covered.

The pics are unreal. I'm trying to imagine what it's like to suddenly be without many things we take for granted in everyday life. Mojo!

Glad to see Jello made it tnrough. I hope the rest of the MIA's check in soon.
