NFL 2017-18 Thread

Even aside from Gruden, that is not particularly surprising.

I don't think Del Rio was doing a bad job at all, but he made a couple of major offseason mistakes last year.
1. Retaining Ken Norton Jr as the DC. He was so obviously in over his head on ran a pathetic defense last year. This year he is even worse, gets fired, and Pagano does twice a well with pretty much no defensive backfield.
2. Letting Musgrave go as the OC. All he did was guide the Raiders to a top 5 offence last season. His replacement all but ruined the offence completely. Well, that coupled with Carr not being 100% most of the season, but the offence was horrible almost all season.

Both of those were squarely on Del Rio. When you take a major backward step like that heads simply have to roll. I'm not sure Del Rio would be back next year even if Gruden was not in the picture. But, of course, he is. I'm pretty psyched about Chucky being back.

Agreed on all counts!

The Redskins are 24-23-1 in their last 48 games.
They have the 6th youngest roster in the league if you discount Vernon Davis.
They have approximately $60M of cap space going into 2018.

3 playoff wins in 25 years.
Making the playoffs 5 times in 25 years.

Give me back to back winning seasons, without a tie, and I will bump them from the terrible list into the mediocre list

Don’t think I didn’t notice that you shoehorned your self-loathing into a discussion about the Browns.

I think the NFL pays the Browns to suck, so when your team is terrible, like mine, you can say, "at least we aren't the Browns"

Did you see the Lions in the locker room after the Browns loss, making the Lions not the only team to ever go 0 and 16? They were popping champagne like they had just won the Superbowl.

and they only had 1 win last season and only 3 wins in 2015.
they're on a pretty bad streak.
at least they can't have negative numbers.

Do you think Cousins will be back?

I don't believe so.

Do you think Cousins will be back?

I don't believe so.

The NFL is so starved for competent starting QBs that the Skins would be stupid NOT to resign him. The only issue being that even mediocre QBs theses days can get $15M a year. So unless they franchise Cousins again (which would be...what ...about $32M??) someone is going to overpay for Cousins, whether it be the Skins or another team.

If Cousins and his agent can get their minds right on a contract commensurate to his actual value and accomplishments in the league, he will. If their stated desire to have him sign the richest contract in league history is still in place, he will not.

I doubt it. I don't think he wants to be here, which is why he didn't even counter their offer from last year. I think they would be incredibly stupid to franchise him again. Its way too much money and there are plenty of other needs on the team. I think there are 19 unrestricted free agents and they can't let them all walk. Giving Cousins a 34-35 million franchise tag, won't help resign other players or grab any free agents from other teams.

Here’s an interesting chart of the teams that will be shopping for a starter this offseason. Keep in kind that Garropolo, Bridgewater, Eli and maybe Bortles will be free agents along with Cousins. Also, keep in mind that Cousins walked away from a long-term deal last year that would’ve guaranteed him $57 million over 3 years and $74 million in case of injury because “God didn’t give him a sign” and “I kinda like 1 year deals”.

I can definitely see a scenario where Cousins gladly inks a 4yr/80M deal with the Skins once he’s gotten his head out of his ass. Cause it’s gonna be pretty slim pickings for a guy like him.

Almost sounds like what the Ravens did with Flacco a few years back.

I'm a little surprised he didn't bench him after saying he would bench a player for stretching for the goal line.

...in the context of a discussion about a dropped 2nd down pass.

Edit: first down, same implications.

The article I saw Bill's benching comments in were about the Carr fumble out of the end zone and the Pittsburgh no catch.

"Patriots players are forbidden from extending at the pylon or while falling across goal line in process of catch. Belichick has made it clear they will be benched." It looked to me like Dion Lewis was extending to me. I guess technically, he was extending at the goal line but the result would have been the same had he fumbled.

Maybe. As you say, that's not a play at the pylon nor is it a reception attempt, so it's out of the scope of the quote. Situational football is a point of emphasis for him, so if he meant to apply that threat to a broader range of plays, he'd probably have stated it that way.

I'll call myself a resident semi-expert on Belichick; what he won't tolerate is risking the work of the team. He'll tolerate risk, but not dumb risk. You know who decides if the risk is dumb or not? He does. And his players have an excellent idea of what's smart and what's not. On the same topic, note how seldom the Patriots have stupid loss-of-composure penalties (the exception this year being Stephon Gilmore, who is deeply suspect to fans because of his Bills (a.k.a. Loser Organization) DNA).

I think the Browns are actually in great shape. For quite some time, the organization lacked clarity and unity, but in non-W/L stats, they're improving. And when you're rebuilding, that matters. I bet they win 4-6 games next year.

As for replacing coaches, you really have to wonder what would come next? Who would take the Denver job these days? Likely not someone who could bring you to contention (because no one can, bcos no QB bcos Elway Da Genyuss). So a new coach would be a lateral move.

That makes coaches like Todd Bowles, Hue Jackson, and Vance Joseph place holders. It doesn't happen often that you get someone like Belichick willing to come in and make a commitment to a long term rebuild these days. That's why the Gruden story has energy - people see him as being given control of the franchise.

If I were a new coach, I'd feel good about joining the Browns, Lions, and Giants. Cards, Raiders, Colts, not so much.
