NFL 2017-18 Thread

Cause you shoehorned it into a thoughtful conversation about the Raiders for no particular reason. Very sports radio-like.

You’re talking about the return of Gruden to the Raiders. Allen was on his staff there. Not sure how that is shoehorning. I’ll take your word for it because I’m no sports radio expert. The 3 minutes a day I listen to the radio is mostly commercials.

You are already on the record, by your own admission, of holding opinions highly influenced by local sports media.

Perhaps a New Years resolution is in order?

Hmm. If experts exist in the field of study, and the speakers are of those experts, is it wrong to consider their views? Hmm.

Just stirring the pot, about a conversation I have no knowledge of. I like to see what my local sports media has to say also. But don't nearly always agree. Lot's to think about for this PNW sports fan this year. No joy in Mudville (the Seattle area can be muddy) this year. Both the Huskies and Seahawks fall short, despite greater potential, due to injuries, inconsistency, and lack of discipline. The Seattle Supersonics have still not returned, though much of the public wants them too (local political problems with the local government, port, etc.) and the Mariners never have been of very much interest. Hoping for a better 2018.

My opinions are not influenced by anyone. My opinions are based on what I see watching games. Some sports media people may agree with what I think.

Now if they have a guest on, like a super bowl champion QB, who gives his opinions on Kirk Cousins, I will take what they say a little more seriously than the guy who says give the job to Colt McCoy, he beat Dallas.

Inside the DC Beltway sports radio is notoriously toxic and adversarial regarding the Redskins...somewhat due to the fact that Snyder has his own pro-ownership AM propaganda outlet. Now, we do have some very thoughtful columnists and analysis in our print and digital media, Wash Post/Rich Tandler/etc., that I’m sure Chad delves into frequently. Unfortunately, Chad doesn’t share those well-considered positions here and opts for drivetime hot takes instead. A yin to my yang, in a way.

And that’s fine...

A perfect example of “confirmation bias”.

Also note that Kirk had his worst game as a professional yesterday...truly awful. But that’s no cause for gloating or celebration on my end. He’s an average QB on a banged up squad in bad weather. It happens. All things considered, he had a decent year and got the team to a respectable 7-9. We should try to resign him in the 18-20M/Andy Dalton/Alex Smith range. Which is exactly what we tried to do last year. But that’s me being thoughtful.

Chad wants to make Cousins the highest paid player in football and fire the GM all of a sudden and he can barely contain his outrage. Go figure.

I don’t believe I’ve ever said I want Cousins to be the highest paid player ever. In fact, I’ve only wanted to sign him to a reasonable contract. Slightly higher than your number in the 22-24 range and that is only because the team botched it so bad with the double franchise tag. They took a gamble and lost. I’ve also never been a fan of Bruce but I didn’t say fire him. I wouldn’t be disappointed at all if he went back to the Raiders.

I'm kinda disappointed that LA sat most of their starters yesterday. It would have been a lot closer of a game but I would have liked to see the Niners go out against them at full strength.

Very hopeful for 2018 with #10. He needs a long term contract.

Er... perhaps you don't recall that I am one of the Patriots fans here. That's ok.
It isn't sour anything other than when you see a catch, it should be a catch. The fact that the rules are such that it wasn't a catch is stupid.

I can't stand the Steelers.

So, if you are talking about me, you are wrong. That's ok too.

I have been watching hockey.

Well, I was thinking I was speaking generally, but in any event no insult was intended. I just don't like complaining about rules ex post facto.

Much more importantly, I think that the rule is actually fine -- that people complain because, you know, that's just what we do these days.

Never a fan of the Browns-Ravens, it was fun to see them choke on Sunday.

Huge congrats to Bills fans (although that's tough about losing Slim Shady).

What are peoples' playoff predictions? I think the AFC teams are all looking very beatable 'any given Sunday;' the top NFC teams look a lot stronger to me. Maybe the Pats and Steelers are going to meet again, and the Rams and Vikings in the NFCCG. I have no faith in Nick Foles.

Wow, didn't see that coming. Apparently Del Rio lost the team. Looks like Chucky time in Oakland again. Everybody into the wayback machine.

Even aside from Gruden, that is not particularly surprising.

I don't think Del Rio was doing a bad job at all, but he made a couple of major offseason mistakes last year.
1. Retaining Ken Norton Jr as the DC. He was so obviously in over his head on ran a pathetic defense last year. This year he is even worse, gets fired, and Pagano does twice a well with pretty much no defensive backfield.
2. Letting Musgrave go as the OC. All he did was guide the Raiders to a top 5 offence last season. His replacement all but ruined the offence completely. Well, that coupled with Carr not being 100% most of the season, but the offence was horrible almost all season.

Both of those were squarely on Del Rio. When you take a major backward step like that heads simply have to roll. I'm not sure Del Rio would be back next year even if Gruden was not in the picture. But, of course, he is. I'm pretty psyched about Chucky being back.

If you are either a Browns fan (I think maybe a few exist) or a Broncos fan you have to be shaking your heads right now.

Hue Jackson guides the Browns to perhaps the worst two year run in NFL history and brags about how great a job he has done. And somehow retains his job. Talk about a lost franchise.

Vance Joseph takes a top 3 defense and turns it into a middling at best defense. The offense is lost from day one. They are consistently outcoached and unprepared every week. Yet he keeps his job. Some of the media reports are saying it is because all the players love the guy so much. IMHO it is because Elway wants to run the team and Joseph lets him. They really need a strong coach on board, but someone like that will want more say in the makeup of the team than Elway is willing to give. Same reason the Broncos don't have a real GM - Elway wants to be the VP of Football Operations, the GM, and co-Head coach all at the same time.

Has the Gruden thing been formally announced? Didn't Gruden and the Raiders have a falling out when he was "traded" to Tampa Bay?

I think the NFL pays the Browns to suck, so when your team is terrible, like mine, you can say, "at least we aren't the Browns"

According to very reliable sources it is a done deal, but Gruden still has an announcing gig with ESPN, and the Raiders have to go through the motions and interview a bunch of other possible coaches to meet the demands of the NFL. So the formal announcement is likely weeks away.

Even the Raiders in their darkest days were not as sorry as the Browns are right now.

The Redskins are 24-23-1 in their last 48 games.
They have the 6th youngest roster in the league if you discount Vernon Davis.
They have approximately $60M of cap space going into 2018.
