Manx Buggy build thread!

Lulz. My house apartment doesnt normally look like this, i just have no place to put stuff until the project is complete. Then i'll do a complete housecleaning.

Phil - Nice work man -

I'm seriously getting the itch to build a buggy. I have the '72 SB Cabrio with pretty much everything original (except the rims and the carpets). I wan't something I can rebuild(1600 CC Engine) and pimp out with chrome. There is no way I wan't to do that with the '72 being most of it al all original.

Another issue is I have the '72 in the garage now - I have my regular daily driver in the other side - If I got another VW then I'd lose my garage totally to both of them :(

I'll post some pics of it for ya at a later date when I get some.

That would be very cool. A buggy and a convert. :thu:

I'd love to see some pics.

I am getting anxious to get mine finished, but this week was overall pretty much a loss. Getting up at 4 am has kinda screwed me up, so i have been getting adjusted. I need to get about 24 sets of bolts, nuts and washers to bolt the body to the pan, i'll pick those up this weekend. I have the wiring harness in my car. I have just been too burnt out this week to work on it. Next week i'll get back after it.

OK, i haven't abandoned the project.

Today, i finished putting the back end together.

And started the wiring. ugh. this will take awhile.

On the way home i saw this on the freeway. Super cool.

How do those things handle on tarmac or dirt? I've only ever heard about them jumping around in sand, really. Can they corner, are the fast on the track?

Oh, they are nothing spectacular, handling wise. They are light, so that helps, but all stock beetle suspension isn't really amazing at that sort of thing. People lower them and put big sway bars on them for autocross, but for one like mine, its pretty average. I kept the front tires pretty narrow, if you put really wide tires on the front they tend to get really squirrely on the freeway.

Finished some front end stuff, got the gas tank mounted permanently, and got the nose piece put on.

And then got the front bumper mounted.

Fiddled with the wiring some more too. Need to finish wiring it, and next get the windshield mounted.

Well, hmmm. Put on the windshield, easy. Buy new seat covers and put them in, easy. Install the rollbar, little more tricky, but i have it already, wont be too hard.

But then, ugh. Put the battery in, then finish all the wiring. the speedometer, the windshield wiper motor, none of my new lights came with bulbs, so i have to get those, then the wires to all the engine and stuff, coil, alternator, backup switch light switch on the transmission, that sort of thing. and im sure once i have it all hooked up it wont all work right, and i'll have to troubleshoot. That will be a challenge. If i get it registered, its tempting at that point to just flat tow it back to my place so i can just fiddle with the electrical here. Cause all that wont be too fun.

Nice Phil - Tell me more about the engine going in. 1600CC or did you bore it out bigger? I'm assuming its a dual port.

Going with dual carbs or single - did you move your gas filter away from the heat? (looks like you didn't on the above pic).

Going with a stock pully or smaller for more RPM?

Did you do anything with the oil cooler?

How about the water pump? (kidding on that one).

 I have searched the web for a new radiator for a 70 beetle, but no luck.

Actually, this motor so far is pretty boring. Its a 1970 1600cc Single port. Stock single carb, stock oil cooler, stock everything so far. No i haven't moved the filter yet, i will though. I need to finish a few things back there still, i still need to shorten the throttle cable, and sadly i lost the little special doohickey that attaches the throttle cable to the carb linkage, so i need to get one of those.

Right now i just really want to get it running, and registered. Once i do that, i can drive it around, and upgrade things as i want to. Its been sitting in my cousin/boss' yard long enough. So i haven't done anything fancy, just the minimum to get it running.
