Manx Buggy build thread!

OK, some more done today, in preparation for the upcoming paint job. One week from today!

First i drilled the holes in the front fenders for the turn indicators. Obviously i took them back off for the paint job, just put them on there so you can see.

Hacked holes in the back for the taillights. Most people just buy trailer/utility lights and put them in, but i wanted sorta a factory beetle look. I think it will be cool, but it took some guts to plunge the cutter into the fiberglass. :embarrassed:

It will look like this.

I finally got the axles installed as well. First i repacked them with Constant Velocity grease, when you do CV's you need to use CV grease, its different than regular wheel bearing grease.

And thats about it. I spent a lot of time sanding the body and getting it ready, but thats not very fun for photos.

So, today im just relaxing at home, but still wanted to make a little progress. My powder coated wheels should be showing up mid-week. I dont want to buy new hubcaps right now, the quality ones are pretty pricey, so for the time being i decided to clean up the ones i got off the beetle. They have some dents and dings in them, but will be perfectly acceptable. Some 000 steel wool and lots of elbow grease.

And yes, thats me in the white wife-beater shirt. :embarrassed: Its hot today.

The hubcaps cleaned up really well.

Nice shirt. :embarrassed:

Thanks, my wife-beater buddy. :embarrassed:

Yeah, i was pretty happy. I hammered out what dents i could, and just rubbed the crap out of them with steel wool and CLR. They'll do nicely.

Well, i just called and confirmed, paint job is happening this Saturday at 9 am.

This week i have just been sanding and doing a little fiberglass repair work on the body, not to exciting for pics.

But Saturday i'll take a bunch!

And my powdercoated wheels are due back next Thursday.

OK, so i have finished all the sanding. After work today i went and washed the parts really well.

Loaded into the back of the truck

And tucked it all away for the night. I'll be getting up early and driving it to the place to get it painted.

This time tomorrow, the painting should be all done! I'll be so glad when this step is over with. Its been exhausting.

Thanks Mark! It's been both exciting and draining lately. Every single day at both lunch and after work, and most every saturday i have been working on this thing. It will be very nice once i can bolt the body to the pan and start wiring it up, putting in the seats and windshield and such.

Whew.

It's just amazing how fast this has come together from my perspective. I still haven't gotten any body work done on my truck :(

Well your truck isn't sitting in your boss' yard with him giving you that look every day. :embarrassed:

It has taken some of the fun out of it, its not like a hobby where i go fiddle with it when i feel like it. There is pressure to get it done and get all my stuff out of his yard. But on the plus side, it has kept me from procrastinating, i just keep pushing ahead.

I try to do one thing a day at least. Thats one less thing to do tomorrow.

yeah. My truck has to wait until I buy a new car for Mrs W, at which time I'll have something else to drive. Then the engine comes out, the bed comes off and is redone and the body and paint work can be done. It'll be in pieces for quite a while at that point.

That will be extremely cool though. Will your father in law help out? Can you use his paint booth and such?

Yeah..it'll be at his shop for a while. He doesn't have an actual paint booth but he does have a sprayer. When they did his truck they cleared out one wing of the shop and made a big old mess. I'll probably have to send my truck out for paint since the guy that did his truck no longer works for him.

Sounds good, it will be fun when you make the plunge.

OK, whew! One more big step behind me.

I got to the place early. It's an Earl Scheib paint place, but i bought my own paint because theirs is a bit crappy. Basically i just rented a booth and hired a painter.

I was there early, next door was a car dealer that had a couple cool cars.

Mark would like this. Selling for $7995!
