Manx Buggy build thread!

No, that belongs to the guy who's property my stuff sits on. I still just have my lexus, although im treating the poor thing like a pickup these days, the trunk and back seat are full of buggy stuff. :embarrassed:

That truck actually wont pass smog in california, so he got a PO box in Nevada and registers it there. The reason? He upgraded it with fuel injection, which makes it run BETTER, but doesnt pass the visual inspection.

California smog laws are stupid. Because it has less to do with smog than it does revenue.

By the way, just to clear up a detail, my buggy is not an actual "Meyers Manx", during the height of the buggy craze there were 150 or so manufacturers. You could even get one from Sears. Mine is actually the Spoiler by Desert Fox.

And, if anyone is interested in reading the interesting and rather tragic history of Bruce Meyers and his buggies, you can read about it here. Its a good article.

As much of a bummer as it all turned out for him, he is in the buggy business again.

I'll definintely give those a read...I got something of an oral history about it all from my father-in-law when I was telling him about this thread a few weeks ago...the place that does the exhausts I sent that site to you a few weeks ago? Apparently the dad has an original one in storage there in the shop...

Oh wow! Those are definately worth a bit more. I'd love to have an original.

Bruce didnt handle the business very well, and as the buggy craze took off, he ended up bankrupt, he couldnt defend his patent.

But he kept a good attitude. His buggy club allows all kinds, not just his, and, even though 80 years old now, he is still in the buggy business. He lives in Valley Center now, just above Escondido where i work. In fact, JJ Cale lives in Valley Center, thats where he and Clapton recorded "Road to Escondido".

And btw, a Meyers Manx won the first Baja 1000 back in 1967. He really has had an interesting life, and its worth a read.

Lookin' good. Although that is the last thing I have time for, this thread is giving me buggy gasssssss.

Well they make them for the full length pan too, so you dont have to go through the shortening step. So that simplifies a bunch. Just get a VW and put the new body on.

Or, buy one thats all done, just needs a little work. I can give you lots of tips.

Well not a whole lot to report today, but i did finally get the old seat mounts ground out of the buggy pan. Seriously, that sucked. Plus it feels like its 100 degrees out today.

Now i have to cut the ones out of the beetle to weld in place. And i was notified my new spindles were shipped today, when they show up i can finish the front end.

Well another not-so-exciting day, i finally got the whole wiring harness out of the beetle to be used later in the buggy. Anyone here enjoy puzzles?

I know, i wanted to mess with it after work, but our forklift broke down, and we really need it, so i was fiddling with it until 6:45 or so last night. By then i was too tired, i just went home.

Hopefully today i make some progress!

well it's way more exciting for me because I don't get the ripped nails and bloody hands and grease on everything, and I don't have to match wires and bleed brakes and whatever else

of course, I also don't get to have a badass buggy at the end of it all

but I do get to look at cool pictures

so keep up the cool pictures for losers like me who used to dream of building my own jeep out of jc whitney catalog parts but never advanced past changing spark plugs
