Manx Buggy build thread!

The filter will probably stay back there for now, just relocate it so its not right above the distributor, and put some hose clamps on it. I dont know, i haven't gotten that far yet, to inspect all the hoses and stuff.

As for the wiper assembly, yeah, i'll be needing that. :embarrassed:

That baja exhaust looks great....I'm looking forward to seeing this come together.

The BugOut is this weekend for any of you east coasters!

OK folks! I made some more good progress tonight after work.

The trans after i took it out of the beetle . . .

I cleaned it up and painted it and installed it in the buggy pan.

I installed it with new Urethane mounts, more tough than stock stuff. The front one is the red doohicky.

Reconnected the shifter tube to the tranny.

And the pan with shifter and tranny in place!

Tomorrow i hope to put the engine on the transmission, install the exhaust, and clean up the engine a little too.

Its getting closer and closer!

Thanks! I'm looking forward to tomorrow, when i put the engine in place. Thats gonna be pretty sweet.

OK, and the project rolls on . . .

The engine on a pallet on a forklift. I had no assistance for today, i was on my own.

After wrestling with it a bit, i got it on there. Alignment can be a little tricky, but once its on, 4 bolts is all it takes.

Hung all the exhaust parts on string and painted them with high temperature white paint.

Cleaned up the motor a bit more, touched up some of the black paint to make it look better. Put the cool little new air cleaner on.

IMG_0997.jpg

And finally mounted the exhaust. Twas a pain in the rear. Seriously.

Now i have a couple days to ponder my next move. I think it will be to pull out the pedals and master cylinder and start dealing with all the cables and stuff.

Sweet! I can't imagine doing the engine by myself...

Well, keep in mind a fully assembled VW engine weighs only about 200 pounds. It makes life a bit easier with some extra hands, but as long as you have a floor jack or something to hold it up in place while you wiggle it on to the transmission, its not so bad.

Where did you get the exhaust from? A friend of my in-laws builds custom exhausts for VW's....

Oh yeah? I probably should have looked more into it. I got this one

http://www.mooreparts.com/store/product/982/AC251120R/

It was only $84, but i had to paint the whole thing, and from experience the paint will probably flake off and it will be a rusty mess in about a year. So i expect summer next year i'll be shopping for either a chrome one, or a ceramic or powder coated one. :embarrassed:

But this gets me started for cheap.

Thanks! Yeah, it is getting exciting. Some hard steps are coming up still. All the wiring for one, taking it out of the bug and transplanting it will be a challenge. Painting the body and mounting it will be a weekend at least. Transferring all the brake and pedal stuff to do still. But overall, yeah, im well on my way!

Here's a blurb about them: http://www.vwtrendsweb.com/events/0406vwt_2003_avwi_awards/index.html

Debi Vasquez, wife of Manuel Vasquez of A-1 Muffler, received the award for the company's new high-performance exhaust system.

The company's new header is ideally effective in design, fit, application and resulting performance. Available in either true 1-3/4-in. or 1-5/8-in., the header relocates the #2 and #4 pipes away from the crank area, allowing more clearance and substantially reducing heat, ultimately increasing performance efficiency.

"Manuel is very appreciative of this award and is extremely honored," said Debi Vasquez, receiving the award for her husband.

Not only was his dad one of my customers when I was in college delivering auto air parts but my inlaws rented the first location for their business from him....strange and small world.

Thats pretty cool Mark. If i ever have the bucks to build a hot motor for this thing, i'll look into those guys. Sounds like quality stuff.

He did the exhaust for my truck pretty cheap (from the y-pipe to the tip) but I also got the "family" price. The nice thing is that he's local so you can get custom stuff done to fit.

OK, didnt do a whole lot at lunch today. Remove the gas tank from the beetle, so i can get access to the steering shaft and the brakes and front end. The gas tank is going to have to have the filler spout relocated, on the beetle the filler comes in from the side, on the buggy the filler is in the middle of the hood. So some welding will take place.

After the tank is removed, this is what you see, the steering and brakes. Thats about all i had time for at lunch, to be continued.

We went to a BBQ at Tom Harkenriders yesterday and one of his neighbors had two bugs "mid project" to be Baja's....it was kind of cool to look at a real VW torn apart after following this thread...

Yeah, they are pretty cool vehicles. i still come across little details as i work on them that i marvel at. Its the only car i know of that i dont curse the engineers as i work on it. Everything is simple and makes sense.
