I'm hoping it's just coincidence, but in the past month i've seen 3 separate instances where an angry old white guy decided to get enraged in a public place. Each time it was in a store (Petco, supermarket, and a liquor store) and was a completely unacceptable reaction to a minor inconvenience or nothing at all.
Petco: guy chewed out an old lady (like sweet grandma old lady) working at the checkout because his coupon didn't work. He bitched her out and wouldn't stop, even when she asked him to please stop, on the verge of tears. The prick quit and left as soon as a store manager made his way over. I told the lady to never let an asshole ruin her day and she laughed.
Supermarket: guy started flailing his arms and raising his voice at the black girl working behind the deli counter because she didn't see him and was about to (god forbid) wait on someone else first. the dude acted like he had been passed over for a kidney transplant. then he stomped away the way my 3 year old does when he's over tired and i tell him it's time for bed.
Liquor store: watched a man's face fill with rage as he began to furiously swear and condemn a fellow customer, under his breath. he was literally swearing into his coat collar. why? because the customer (black guy) was talking on his cell phone as he perused the wine section. angry dude caught me watching him and asked, very quietly, "can you believe this? carrying on with his conversation like we're not here?" I rolled my eyes and looked away. angry dude kept going, swearing even more harshly but still quietly. coward. I calmly announced to no one in particular that the only person bothering anyone was him. He didn't like that and stomped out of the aisle. He didn't leave of course, he slammed his bottles of whatever on the counter and paid for them first.
Again, i hope this is coincidence. But...I've lived here and have been visiting each of these stores for over 10 years. I've never seen anything like this before. Then I see it in 3 separate stores all directed at women and/or minorities.
I fear Trump has rolled back a certain level of decency in this country. My bigger point here, however, is to remind myself and anyone who has made it through my shitty post to be extra civil, extra kind, maybe even a little more compassionate as you go about your day. We all need to right now.
