The (nonexistent in this country) Sharia Law bogeyman that the right is so pants-crappingly afraid of is fundamentalism, but of the Mohammedan variety rather than the Christian variety.
The problem with religion isn't the moderates*. The problem with religions of practically every stripe is the fundamentalists. They are the ones who wish to force everyone to behave by the tenets of their own religion by practically any means, legally and otherwise, up to and including terrorism and violence.
No one religion is the problem; zealots of all religions are the problem.
* When I said the problem with religion isn't the moderates, I wasn't entirely correct. Moderates are a problem when they go along with fundamentalist whackadoodles because they are coreligionists. Just like "good" cops are often problems because they allow the "bad" cops to behave like hooligans with impunity and don't speak out or take action against their lawless brethren. It's ugly tribalism on display.
