OMG Politics, I'm over it already.

Yeah, my wife and were talking about how Kaine is massively preferable to Trump or Pence. Hell, he's preferable to Hillary, so I'd gamble on her health even if she had terminal cancer and was given exactly 130 days to live.

Kaine is awesome. But being from VA, I may be a little biased.

I like to think of it less as bias and more of educated. We know his work as Governor and now Senator and are therefore aware of what he has done and has to offer. Is he perfect? Nope, but damned if he's not the most appealing person on either ticket.

While you are correct that a PERCENTAGE of Trump supporters are what you say, I find your "gross geralization" as objectionable as both his and hers...

Painting groups with a broad brush is stereotyping and shows as much or more bias as the bias you're railing against...and I put it in the same category...

As I stated in my response to Smurfco, bias is bias...and intolerance is intolerance...on one side it is based on bigotry and hate, the other is based on elitism, superiority, and judgement...neither side has a corner on the bias market, and neither side can claim innocence...

I'm not railing against bias, I'm railing against Trump. And I disagree that a single off-hand, sincere and sadly accurate broad brush stroke (clearly targeted at a portion, as she didn't call all of his supporters deplorable) is as bad as the continued and completely unapologetic diatribes that Trump spews on a near daily basis. Words spoken in the heat of moment are often not an indicator of bias, but can be targeted as these were against an unfortunate presence and to and specific audience that finds Trump and all of his complicit supporters deplorable. And in all fairness, I would give either candidate the benefit of the doubt if they apologize for horrible statements. Hillary has done this in this case. Trump has not only refused to do this with any statement he's made, he's instead doubled, tripled, quadrupled, etc. -down on his hate speech. Standing unwaveringly behind every absolutely horrible statement he's ever made. And even once reasonable folks like Giuliani find themselves trying to explain away and ultimately tacitly agreeing with these horrible statements.

Again, Hillary is not perfect, but she's acknowledging an unsavory generalization and apologizing. Trump and the tea party folks find this to not be an option. Acknowledging being wrong is a sign of weakness among these folks. In reality it's just a sign of ignorance.

But it's all good. We can disagree.

Idiot compassion is not productive.

Not sure how you can get around this, though.

The Trumps have knowingly embraced a White Power icon. You can either be on that boat or not, there is no 'kinda'. While I don't much like Hill, I fucking loathe Trump, and by guilt of association, his supporters from this moment forward. They can no longer claim they don't know what he is about. They, and we all, know exactly what this means. Fuck him, and fuck them.

I'm not so much interested in whether Clinton's statement was a faux-pas, a political misstep, an election blunder, an unpleasant reminder, a sign of elitism or condescension, so much as one single question: is she right or wrong?

I feel that there is an abundance of evidence to support the former.

Yep, but it makes for less fun give and take in this thread. :thu:

Turning Pepe into a white nationalist icon was one of our original goals, although we’ve had our hands in many other things.”

One of those things has been helping to turn Taylor Swift into an “Aryan goddess.” When several publications (Broadly, Slate, and The Washington Post) this week reported on the alt-right’s fixation on the pop star, #FrogTwitter was somewhat triumphant. “I never thought that would work,” @JaredTSwift said, “but they finally noticed.”

And:

As much as I loathe her that's still creepy and terrible.

a question/thought has run through my mind a few times over the last few months. what are these people (the white supremesists, etc.) going to do if (when) trump gets defeated in november? they are very 'out of the closet', so to speak. they've been very loud and vocal (and violent at times), do they just slink away? do they start riots?

I agree with @jelloman that ideally, broad brushing is to be disfavored. I like discussions to be more precise. However, I disagree that this one comment shows bias equal to the crap that has spewed from Trump's mouth, and the mouths of many (not all) of his supporters. Now, was the statement helpful for Hillary to have made? Not so sure about that.

Neither. They'll simply just grow in number.

I believe that it's something that needs to be honestly and acknowledged if the nation is to move forward. This is something that has always existed in this country, and the Civil War, despite its copious bloodshed, was not cleansing. If you don't confront a problem with cold clarity, then you let it continue. The US didn't have it's 'truth & reconciliation' era; it has let its wounds fester.

I agree with you. But timing is everything, and I think it is debatable whether now at this point in the campaign is the right time. There is an election to be won. But then again, when is the right time? Hard to say. Also, defining what the "it" is to be acknowledged is very important. I think that is a hard thing to do. One runs the risk of generalizing about people in a way that then can be turned around and pointed at as generalizations or "broad brushing". I am not sure I could do it. I think it takes focusing on the negative traits, actions etc. to be acknowledged rather than any one set of people. But without holding offending people accountable, it is hard to effect change. So, difficult thing to do to discuss on a national level.

Of everything you and I agree and disagree about, this is one thing we are in 100% agreement on...

I'm not seeing where the Trump's or the campaign are endorsing this...if they are then by all means they should be crucified for it...
