Off to shoot the Grand Canyon tomorrow!!!

Yeah so that's not happening.

Waited outside for 50 minutes, phoned office, some guy who sounds like he's been out all night answers the phone:

"uh you, uh, never told us what hotel you were at"

Really? so how did the guy I spoke to on the phone, who sounds a lot like you, told us to stand at the 1-OAK entrance? you knew fine well we were at the mirage

"uh well there's been a miscommunication"

No, someone at your end hasn't taken a note or bothered to phone us back - I communicated perfectly fine.

"yeah but I mean it would be your word against ours"

Uh no it would be your word against mine, the Mirage's phone records and my credit card provider, good luck with that.

"uh, I'll get your refund processed just now"

fucking idiot, we won't get a chance to go at all now :(

that sucks.

Yup. I teach a lot of emotional literacy to my students and one upside is that I'm really good at self checking myself now when I'm getting stressed, anxious or angry but I was fucking livid on the phone to this clown this morning. One thing I love about the States is you guys do customer service properly and this guy could not have given less of a shit to what is probably a once in a lifetime trip for most people. He didn't even ask if we'd be able to reschedule or anything.

Anyhoo a strongly worded e-mail later (the British way  ) and we've already been refunded.

Which I've put towards a scooter tour of red rocks tomorrow :thu: Jill is down as a passenger and I've told her she can walk home if she bottles it after 5 minutes like she did at the ice skating

If anyone's got any tips or manual settings for shooting out there that would be cool. I'll be taking a 10-20 wide, 18-55 and 70-200 long.

it sounds like a lot of your shooting will be of large landscapes, which means as high an aperture setting as you can (15-20+). use aperture priority and let it control the shutter speed automatically.
USE A TRIPOD!!!
if you do any up close macro type stuff (cactus close ups, etc) use a low (number) aperture (1.4-5) and absolutely use a tripod.
if it's pretty sunny, use a circular polarizer, if you have one. if not, try to get one. know what diameter your lenses are before going to the store. you can ususally get one in the $20-25 range. it will make the sky a wonderful sapphire blue. and make colors 'pop'.

thems my advices. :thu:

Don't mean to be that guy, but please don't do nude shots at Red Rocks. When I lived there, there was a huge problem with lots of people getting naked in the rocks and ... you just really don't want to be out hiking and stumbling over that. And it really does happen all. The. Time.

Other than that, I'd go to the north end of the sub-loop road near the main formation, and try to get a south-looking shot down-valley that has the formations on the left, the Spring Mountain escarpments on the right.

Also, if you get off the scooter somewhere on the main road south of the 13 mile sub-loop, and walk about a 1/4 mile into the cacti, you may find yourself encountering the wild burros, which are a great, great photo op in that environment.

Have a great time.

Nah man that's totally not my style. Plus my missus would kill me, she didn't even want me to dabble in the rec weed

Just, uh, be on the lookout. If it were the Swedish Ladies Curling team, I don't think I'd have been so ... 'bummed.'

It never was. Never was.

I've stayed at a swing friendly resort in Cancun a few times and the type of guests in the promo pictures and the actual type they had were VERY different

If I'd actually been there to partake I'd have been expecting some sort of refund for false advertising  :embarrassed:

I watched these guys fly over the house this afternoon and it was clear they were going to land in an empty lot one street over, so I grabbed my camera. The afternoon sun made the colors scream.

I got out for the afternoon today with the new T6i. Went out to Harvard Ma to buy some apples and took a couple shots from the hill. Incredibly clear day too. This is Mt Wachusett and the smaller mountains to the north. The fullsized image is a whopping 6000x4000 px. I used the autofocus on these, and it looks decently sharp. Once I learn to use it better, that will get better as well. I shot these at ISO 100, with a 55-250 zoom. The second image shows mountains all the way north into New Hampshire, the ones on the very right side are up near the lakes region between Manchester & Concord. I am damned impressed with this.

Looking to buy a full frame. Have a budget of around £2k

Canon D5 mk3 vs Nikon D810 vs anything else??? Go

You could look at the mirrorless ones, Sony and Fuiji do some good ones I think. I don't really know about camera gear much though

I did that but they just seem like higher end phone cameras. The fact the highest res one I found at my price point tapped outat 13 megapixels was a deal breaker.

I ended up getting the nikkon

i don't know what your price point is in US $, but full frame DSLR's are quite pricey, especially when you start getting up to 24MP and beyond.

2,000 GBP = 2,831. 98USD according to XE

It was actually a little over that but came with some different lower end lenses and stuff.

The mirrorless stuff will maybe get there but my brother knows a bit - he has a canon 5d - and pointed out that DSLR and full frames have been about for decades and whilst mirrorless are the future - so was beta max at one point  :embarrassed:

Cell phone picture of the local castle. Not a great picture as the iPhone sensor isn't so good in low light and I snapped this while walking home from the tram stop, but I still like the cool lights and reflections off the water. That is a moat, if it isn't all that clear. Castle is from the 1300's and was renovated into a house around 1700. It is now a fancy restaurant.

I don't really get the mirrorless thing. I guess size is the big selling point, but when you stick a good piece of glass on it the size of the body isn't all that relevant. If anything, the mirrorless I have held feel weird with a big lens on them. The ergonomics also kind of stink with no good grip, small buttons, and lots of functions buried in software. All my lenses are canon and their mirrorless seem to get not so great reviews, which has also kept me away. If you want a pocket camera, get a point and shoot with some DSLR like functions or use your phone. If you really want to take pictures, bring a big camera with a good sensor and some good lenses. I'd love it if my 5d fit in my pocket with a 28-300 L on it, but it doesn't. The trade off is that it has an amazing full frame sensor that can do almost anything.
