Played my first round of golf today

I was a bogie machine this weekend. Especially Sunday - 1 par, 2 doubles, and 15 bogies. My swing and short game were both decent so it was kind of disappointing not to score better.

Played with my main golf buddy, brother and dad yesterday. Shot a 103. My brother was on fire and shot a 76. Scores could have been better, the scorched earth fairways caused a lot of bounce and downhill roll. Wet greens were especially challenging, like putting on a sponge.

just got off the course half an hour ago. played 9 holes, partnered up with some folks up from columbus, that are from here.
we didn't keep any score at all. just hit the ball and see where it goes.
had some good drives, irons, wedges and putter.....and some not so good ones too.

Another 103 yesterday. Lost by 2 strokes. Need to use irons in the thick stuff from now on.
i've been playing a different course lately, and their rough is pretty deep/thick, so i took the 3 hybrid out and put the 4 iron back in.
actually needed it twice sunday. :thu:

Here is a question for all of you golfers.

My girlfriend's Aunt Carrie, and Uncle Jay, are always talking about golf. They play often and get quite serious about it. Uncle Jay tells me with a gleam in his eye, "hey man, if you don't golf, you just can't understand". I have been to the driving range twice in my life, but have never tee'd off on a single hole of G.

So here's my question: On two separate occasions, I have played, and beaten each of them in miniature golf. Soundly. I will not say who, but one of them gave me an incorrect score in their favor on two separate holes. I said nothing with a smile as I wrote down the number they gave me. I still prevailed. A couple of children even gathered around to gawk at my short game. I drilled a hole in one on the windmill. There was no advice, or golf tips from either Jay, nor Carrie, after my two victories. Twas a quiet ride home.

I guess there wasn't really a question.

You should play for-real golf to see if your game holds up when there aren't any little castles and dinosaurs and stuff.

Putting is one thing, but the really hard part, believe it or not, is hitting shots from just off the green. It seems like a simple thing to pitch it or chip it such a short distance, but so many things can go wrong that will make you overshoot the green or wind up in a sand trap (which is a whole 'nother challenge altogether).

Also when it comes to a full swing, it takes golfers years to get it somewhere consistent, and even then they make mistakes that put them in difficult situations, or out of bounds (lost ball). Some holes that have hazards in your path can be down right intimidating, and it will get in your head.

Golf is the most frustrating, and yet rewarding game you can play. When you hit that perfect shot, you want to do it again, so when you fuck up, you just keep plugging away.

and often times when you're just off the green, the answer is NOT to grab a wedge, but rather grab a 7 iron and swing it like a putter. don't break your wrists or elbows. bump and run. :thu:.

that's golf. 4 million ways to get the ball where you want it.
i like to give non-golfers this reference: imagine in baseball if the batter had 14 bats, all different lengths and weights and the baseball was half the size and the batt boy gets to choose which batt the player hits....how many home runs do you think he'd be getting ??
that's golf. THE most difficult sport there is to play consistently.

Bump and run is great, unless there is a bunker between you and the green. Now you have to lob it, and I screw that up Every. Damn. Time.

i don't know how you are using your wedge, but you can try this:

grip your wedge, take the club back to about 8 o'clock, do not cock your wrists, do not bend your elbows, do not straighten you knees coming thru the ball. swing the wedge like a strong putter, and sweep the grass, get the club under the ball, but don't take any divot, follow thru to about 5 or 4 o'clock and keep saying to yourself "sweep the grass.....sweep the grass". try it with different wedges to find your sweet spot/distance.
:thu:

edit: also, put the ball a little further back in your stance, maybe half way between middle and the inside of your back foot.

I've been using my chipper for anything less than 60 yards with pretty good success. I'm holding off on lob wedges. RAY COOK FTW!

Generally what happens when I need to lob a shot with my wedge is that I hit thin, so instead of getting up in the air, it goes along the ground like a bump and run, but way too hot, so I either overshoot the green or end up in a bunker.

I need more practice with my short game for sure.

refer to above. if you've got a yard, try it there. if not, go to the driving range and give it a go there. but like i said....sweep the grass, under the ball. you are probably standing up on the down stroke, fwhich pulls the club up and sculls it, instead of staying in the bent knee position that you started in. just sayin'

Yeah, that's the issue. I spent some time at the range working on pitching and chipping. I just need more practice.

Played 9 after work as per my plan.

64.

Bogey, 3 double bogies which I'm quite happy with.

My driving was excellent on all but 2 holes for a change. Need to remember that grip, it totally took the slice out. Nice warm day so the ball flew for miles too.

My putting was pretty decent too over the piece, my fairways let me down. Still, lovely way to spend afternoon.

That's about what I shoot for 9 holes. Nice to know I'm in good company.
