What did you mean with that shining beacon thing?
people around the world looked at america as the place where torture did not happen. where mass spying on it's citizens did not happen. where the police did not gun down unarmed citizens in broad daylight with many onlookers and get away with it.

we do all those things now. just like USSR, China, NK, 1930's Germany, etc.
and it all came out of politicians grabbing at more power and control. we have become 1984.
we have become exactly what we accused the "axis of evil" of doing.

Yes. Let's not start discussing any details here or get any of that going here. I just am looking for good strategies for avoiding being beat over the head with it every time I go online. Hiding stuff from my timeline, and unfollowing certain folks seem to be the best strategies so far.
or just don't go on social media.

I had to stop going to Chuck e Cheese when my daughter was 4 because I almost got in a fight.

The kids are shitheads. The parents are busy on their phones or too lazy to discipline them, and I'm the kind of jackass that will say something. I realized this is not what Gary Blanchard would do. I should not go to place that makes me angry.

What did you mean with that shining beacon thing?

Was it a grail shaped beacon, by any chance?

See, humor is the best way to survive the perpetual political shit storm. Life gets shorter and sucks more when we take it too seriously. Thanks to the many bozos at all levels and on both sides of the aisle, the source material is limitless.

I'm finding it fascinating to watch. There are some people who are obnoxious about it on FB, but if you look at it as a manifestation of an incredibly interesting phenomenon (rather than your friend/relative being a prick), it's a great time to be a "follower" of politics.

I wish I could have that level of detachment. I was raised by a judge of moderate and practical political views (which he publicly kept to himself as he was elected to a non-partisan position) and taught that things were supposed to work a certain way in favor of the people, and that the institutions of government were bigger than pure party politics. As such, it is really, really hard for me to look at this train wreck.
