I was watching the PBS American Experience piece on the Freedom Riders in 1961. As bad as things seem now, watching that piece reminds me very well that things the US has never fully lived up to that ideal. And, that the fact that the US did not currently live up to the ideal did not stop those people from keeping the dream and attempting to move the ball forward in actually attaining the promises within that dream. I suppose the same is true now. That all sounds preachy, as I look over what I just typed. But, other than despair, what other option is there? I suppose apathy. And the 'shining beacon' was an aspiration, not a reality. Ask a black person, a gay man, a trans woman, etc.
By any international standard or index of civil rights and human development, the US hasn't led the world in my lifetime. For a president to acknowledge this is a good thing, not a bad thing.
But, other than despair, what other option is there?
I added apathy, editing before I saw this. Hope and faith are necessary, but need to be accompanied by pro-activity as you say, or some sort of effort, if only getting out to vote.Hope
Apathy
Faith
Pro-activity
Probably a few more.
The 'both sides suck' mentality bothers me, to some degree.
Yes, it's true, but that doesn't mean that both options are both equally shitty. I'd rather be stabbed in the arm than shot in the chest.
Of course, a Republican always gets nominated, so she might as well use that ticket, since she sucks at understanding our election process. Nice catch, Sonik; I know you highlighted that word.Another option: Moving to Canada.
"During Thursday's episode of ABC's daytime talk-fest "The View," Raven-Symonè made a bold declaration -- and a promise that we will hold her to.
"My confession for this election is if any Republican gets nominated I'm gonna move to Canada with my entire family," she asserted.
Asked if she was joking, Raven-Symone declared, "I already have my ticket. I literally bought my ticket, I swear.""

Which is why I am stunned at the reaction to a lot of what Trump says: like the POTUS works like a monarchy.Meanwhile, we all pay little to no attention to the election of senators and members of congress. Those are the elections that really matter. The POTUS spectacle is just another sleight of hand that draws our collective attention away from what's really important.
Which is why I a new stunned at the reaction to a lot of what Trump says: like the POTUS works like a monarchy.
That’s how most people run for POTUS. Everybody else is making grandiose promises, too. Nobody even mentions congress.
The public controls the media, not the other way around. It's just business.
The government controls the american media because it control media access to government. When GHW Bush ran for president GW Bush kept a list of every reporter that pissed off the family. Said reporters were then blackballed from White House functions. The Pentagon does the same thing, which is why Barbara Starr on CNN always sounds like she’s just reading a press release and generally avoids topics like war crimes and military spending boondoggles. The best example of this was the Stanley Mcchrystal PR disaster. Army officers got so used to misbehaving around reporters and not having it reported that when a reporter finally did his job it got a four-star general fired.
maybe so, but the candidates are not the government. the media could do a MUCH better job calling them out on their bullshit.
where are Woodward and Berstein when you need them?
Name and town name and town name and townWell, Woodward is still working with The Washington Post, which is still a good paper.
But its circulation of 1/4 the size of The O'Reilly Factor's viewership.
Name and town name and town name and town
