off-topic from the last couple of pages, but I saw this on wikipedia whilst researching voter ID laws:

I immediately got an image of a cartoon of some Swiss guy at the voting polls wearing nothing more than a trench coat, and showing his 'sword' to get in and vote

My kids learned long division in 4th or 5th grade. The youngest is 11 years old.

That's not correct. My 12-year-old son learned it too.

most of the kids around here don't use it. maybe they go over it for an hour, but then that's it, they're on to common core from there.

My daughter is in 4th grade and learned cursive writing last year. Her school also has a 1+1 initiative in place.

Now that's a real thing. My kid had cursive for a few months back in third grade. Then that was it--never again. Weird!

I'm in my 30s and can't write in cursive without thinking about it. I've got my own hybrid print chicken scratch thing I do.

I think it is more important to be able to read it than write it.

Just goes to show that states really are vastly different. Not completely sure if that is a good thing or not.
