That's my entire argument. It's especially important if you hate the major party candidates. Your protest vote for a third party candidate, as terrible as they might be, registers your dissent far more effectively then just not turning out.

I have an incredibly smart friend who refuses to vote. Says his vote doesn't matter and that elections are a sham. He'll rail against every social issue he wants changed, and has been implored by nearly everyone he knows to run for office. But "politics are a sham" so he won't get involved. It's disappointing.
