NFL 2017-18 Thread

I would agree with you guys that just because Gronk is big, does not mean guys should be able to get away with crap on him. Doesn't excuse his reaction, but I do agree.

I don't agree on Brady, but then again, you guys wouldn't expect me to.

Very impressed with Garoppolo, and the rest of the team rose to the occasion with him. Sure, it was only one game, and the 5 trips to the red zone w/o a TD. That will fix itself.

The Niners are back.

The Giants fired McAdooche and Reese today.

Why did they wait until after McDickbag fucked up Eli's streak?

Probably to see if the Giants reacted by playing well. We know how that went. Really weird turn of events -- with their record, why not just wait until the end of the season? It just makes it look yet more dysfunctional.

The Gronkowski calls / non-calls are redolent of Lindros, Shaq, and perhaps LeBron to an extent (though they gifted him with an extra step or two to the basket). Or all the times they let linemen hit Cam Newton.

It's just wrong, and once it becomes ingrained it's like some weird Lord of the Flies of officiating, where it's sort of never made right again. Of all the animus around the Patriots, deserved and otherwise, I would think that Bob Kraft might say something. Really, if Tony Romo is talking about it, you can call it common knowledge.

Well Gronk just got a 1 game suspension for that hit, despite his 'apology'. Bullshit. Should be a lot more than that.

"A lot more than that."

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Actually, it's overkill. Of course, I remember how animated you got about Vontaze Burfict's various issues. And weren't you writing a long and spirited post about Marcus Peters' flagrant disrespect of the officials?

Nah, it's just Piling On The Patriots. Which, you know, I actually love, because it's the last resort of fans of shitty teams.

@Danhedonia , I don't know that I think one game suspension is overkill. If a Seahawk had done that, I would have expected a suspension. Not Pat piling from me. Not sure I agree it needs more suspension either. But something to get his attention on the fact that even if you are provoked, you have to have a little more self control than that.

You talking to me? I have no idea who those people are.

But Gronks elbow to the back of Whites neck was flagrant.

So, you know how long a suspension should be, but you don't know who some of the marquee players in the NFL are?

Just trying to understand.

I very rarely watch any AFC games, so they aren't exactly household names to me. And I most certainly did not have the conversation with you that you claim to remember. You might want to use the search function and figure out whom you meant.

Stop being a Patriots apologist. Doesn't matter what happens, everyone is piling on the poor Pats. Boo fucking hoo. Every.Single.Time.

That hit was late, out of bounds, and to the neck of a defenseless and unaware opponent.

Look at the film. Read the suspension letter. Then tell me how the league got it all wrong and they are out to get the Patriots.

I'll wait to see how you react to Juju Smith Schuster's hit on Vontaze Burfict, and his discipline.

I was not quoting you, but being sarcastic. Suspensions aren't based on the whim of casual fans, but handed out supposedly in accordance with history. Gronkowski's suspension is severe in the context of the last several years of league discipline. Arguing that you're ignorant of this ... kind of makes my point, doesn't it?

I am no expert on NFL suspensions. And these things seem to continue to evolve. However, I do have one opinion on the JuJu hit vs. Gronk penalty. JuJu's hit was clearly illegal, and should be fined. Probably fined pretty hard. That said, the penalty was for an illegal hit during the play that was still going on. Gronk's hit was like a full on punch well after the play, out of bounds. His own player had just tagged the guy down right in front of him, the dude was out of bounds. And Gronk in reaction to what he felt was poor officiating, put the full weight of his ample body on the back of that guy's head and neck. Out of bounds, well after the play. So, that makes is a suspension to me. @smorgdonkey above said everyone knew it was dirty, including Gronk. And I will add including Belichick, according to the reports.

Again, I do not say this as piling on the Pats. If Sherman, or Kam, or one of the others had lost their cool after a play, or I guess if Graham had (he is not built like Gronk though), I would expect a suspension also. This is just my opinion on your question or request for a comparison.

I want to add that having done criminal defense, I am looking at this from a point of view of PROVING intent. After the play, much easier to prove, as compared to during the play, where the penalty could be blamed on poor execution or technique, the hit didn't go as expected, whatever. But if they change that rule to more of a strict liability thing (which maybe they should. can discuss that more later), then that would be different. Depending on how the updated rule looks.

I saw that this morning. Interesting that you had mentioned both of them before this incident. It was an illegal hit, but nowhere near the likes of the Gronk hit. Yes, he blindsided him, in what I assume to be retribution. The taunting after the hit was over the top. Still, the hit was nowhere near as dangerous as Gronks. Part of my issue with Gronk is that IMHO he's better than that, and took out his frustration by applying a severe sucker hit. Cowardly, which I would never have thought I would say about him. He may regret it now, but he meant to do it at the time. In that moment, he was no better than Suh on his worst day.

Look, I like hard hitting football, when it is within reason and within the rules. Ronnie Lott is probably my favorite player of all time, and he dished out some spectacular hits during his day. But they were legal, appropriate, and he usually helped the guy up as soon as the whistle blew. I guess it's a different game these days.

Juju may have gotten by with a fine if it wasn't for the standing above him like Ali and taunting him. Don't get me wrong, it was a hard, dirty hit but at least it was during the play and in bounds. And you are correct, Gronk is better than that, you expect those kind of shots from a bad team that is losing, not the defending super bowl champs and not when they are winning by 20 points with under 5 minutes to go.

BTW, did you see Beckham's comments about the Brady tirade? Can you imagine the reaction if Beckham screamed at a coach like that?
