National Football League 2018

I think the end of the Super Bowl was all about luck - first the Seahawks, with the pinball catch, and then Butler's pick. Butler maybe had a bit more execution-to-luck ratio, but meh.

I just don't get to see a lot of players actually play, and yet see the web stories. Wilson's always been a riddle to me. Guy looks like Superman, but hasn't shredded the league.

Back then, I looked forward to every Seahawks game against the Pats. They seemed like epic battles. Losing Jeremy Lane AND Cliff Avril really hurt the Seahawks when they finally seemed to have Brady a little rattled and off his game. He recovered quickly once Avril wasn't in his face nearly every play. Brady's confidence, focus and tempo seemed to visibly recover.

Fun fact from the game last night. Janikowski and Brady are the only two players still active from the 2000 draft. Nobody from previous drafts is still playing in the NFL.

Well yeah, because Vinateri wasn't drafted, he came into the league in 96. That is pretty crazy he is still playing.

Wow, really? I knew he was one of the NFL's senior citizens, but I didn't know he'd been in the league since '96. I guess when I think about it, I have heard his name for quite a while now.

I feel like an old man and he was born a year after me

I had no idea either. I thought he came in around the same time as Brady.

Around New England, Vinatieri is the one who melts the real townie girl hearts. Brady's considered hot but unreachable. (Edelman also is a big crush object).

I don't think I've seen Brady rattled except in the '07 Super Bowl. He gets pissed, but like the robot he is, he just keeps trying to execute.

He was starting to get there in the super bowl between our teams, and had had some ineffective plays, and almost looked like he made a bad choice or two for once. But then Avril went out, who had been getting to him from the line, and Jeremy Lane, who had been on coverage helping prevent plays. He immediately recovered his composure. You could see his confidence and tempo increase, and just like that, he was back in Terminator robot mode.

I've watched an awful lot of Tom Brady - he's far from perfect. Even though he makes reads at a world-class level, he's still an athlete and athletes make bad decisions, etc. (I'd say the one area of decisions where he stands out is avoiding bad INT's, but he does those from time to time).

And if you watch the NFL, you have seen his combine pics and stats - he's no physical machine.

He's just the most mentally tough SOB you're likely to see, pretty-boy looks or not. I don't love him the way many Pats fans do (the Trump friendship was really ugly to me, and there are other things I don't care for about him), but his will to win is at an insane level. That's how you come back from 28-3, and really, it's the only way.

The other day I realized that as a Pats fan, I'm really more into the brotherhood of being a fellow Masshole than I am into the players /team members. Being a Bostonian from a certain era (pre gentrification) is a deep stain on the soul. Rooting for the Bruins and Red Sox is a profound experience; Celtics next; then the Patriots (nice job, guys, but if they moved to St. Louis I wouldn't weep).

For me, that is also true on two levels. Coming from Tacoma, when the place looked and was literally a place described in a Springsteen lyric, and more generally, Seattle pre-californication, when Ballard was still full of nordic people, Red Hook was still in the neighborhood, Ivar was still alive barking about keeping clam, the Nordstroms still owned the Seahawks, etc.

Pre-californication - you mean "simply more white people?"

Happens everywhere. I know that there's no way I could stomach living in Boston any more.

Going to add: this is going to be a tough year for the Patriots. I can't see them winning more than 11 games.

I don't think he is, but I am trying to be a considerate Weinerdom citizen. I am willing to bet that your Pats year won't be as rough as my Seahawks year. Ok, see? Back to football.
