Manx Buggy build thread!

I'm dying for this thing to run and drive. Carbs are a PITA to rebuild and get running smoothly.

Yep! Tomorrow i go back to work on the $%&$@# brakes. Once thats done, i can drive it around, although i still need to put in seatbelts, and there are a LOT of wiring and light issues. But it's moving along!

Cool.

I finally picked up my axle assembly. Hopefully it's okay. It's from an '06 with 56,000 miles (my truck is a 2000 with 140,000 miles, but the axle has been the same since the early 90s apparently). My main concern is that on the tag, in the comment section, it says "May be bent". I have no idea how I'd know that until I get it on the truck and try to drive it. I mean, I can turn the driveshaft collar and the hubs turn, so other than that, I don't really know what to do to test it. I did ask the junkyard and they said if there was a problem, I could exchange it, but that would mean doing the work twice and having to make another 4 hour round trip to the junkyard for an axle that is older and higher mileage. I'm crossing my fingers that it isn't damaged in any way.

Hmmm, that would be a little scary, yeah. I'm trying to think of a way you could measure the runout out at the hub with a dial indicator or something, to see if it turns true or not.

I hope it works out ok though. If not, well, it always goes faster the second time. :embarrassed:

Yeah, I'm hoping when I take it to Jeff's house, he thinks of a way to measure it. I'd hate to put it on there and then realize when it vibrates me off the road that it's bent. :embarrassed:

The good news is that if it has to be done twice, the second time should be a lot easier since all the nuts and bolts will be easier to break loose.

It'll probably be a weekend project sometime around the end of the month. I really need to get the truck back on the road before one of two things happens.

1: It starts snowing a lot
2: The van completely falls apart (it's not far from it now).

Well, if i was out there, i'd certainly give you a hand. I am looking forward to hearing how it comes out. I'm sure it would be nice to have it back on the road.

I'm sure you'd be helping me. I think I'm in good hands with Jeff though.

You may remember Jeff from P-Stock '09. He's the bass player here.

He's a huge gearhead and has owned and worked on a bunch of old muscle cars and 4x4s over the years. If I'm gonna need help on a mechanical problem, he's probably the one I'm gonna call first. Plus, his house is almost completely downhill from mine, so even if the truck can't move under its own power, I could probably coast it to his house.

Yeah, i remember Jeff now. Seemed like a good guy. I think you even pointed his house out to us on a beer run or something. Sounds like you'll be in good hands.

Well poop.

Finally got the master cylinder all in, lines hooked up, trying to bleed the brakes and the part of the master cylinder going to the rear brakes is faulty. I have to take it all back out and exchange it.

So close, and yet so far.

OK, got the replacement master cylinder in. Will buy more brake fluid tomorrow and try bleeding them again, lets pray it works this time. :embarrassed:

Well, since i havent done any pics for awhile,

Here is the Master Cylinder and the brake reservoir that i made a little bracket for.

So, i have brakes now. I got in to try and drive it around a little, but sadly no clutch, although i think it just needs some adjustment. But i ran out of lunchtime, so we'll have to try that later.

Hooray! (Click on it, its a video)

It was hard to drive and shift whilst holding a camera. And there is an exhaust leak that needs to be dealt with. but hey, it moved.

I actually drove it to my work and back, which is only a couple blocks, but it made it!

It was fun to drive, although i was wondering if it was going to blow up on me. haha.

It's fairly quick. Stock VW motors arent known for speed, but this weighs hardly anything, so that helps. It scoots along just fine.
