Manx Buggy build thread!

It was fun to drive, although i was wondering if it was going to blow up on me. haha.

It's fairly quick. Stock VW motors arent known for speed, but this weighs hardly anything, so that helps. It scoots along just fine.

It sounded good in the video, for sure.

I saw one of these outside of my gig Thursday night and fell in love..if I had the money I'd be shopping right now:

i absolutely LOVE those Oldsmobiles.

I had never seen this particular model before. I told my father-in-law (who started working for Oldsmobile in 1966) and he explained why that was such a killer car. After that I REALLY want one. The "Turnpike Cruiser" version apparently is very like a 442.

Oh it will do well off road in general. It will keep up with most 4X4s, i fully intend to get it dirty.

It does great in sand. With the stock motor it wont be very fast, and going straight up the face of huge dunes might be a bit of a struggle, that is pretty much all horsepower. But it will get around sand dunes just fine.

This is so cool. You've inspired me to start a project in the coming months. Nothing quite so involved as building a car from scratch :) but it's going to be my first time doing anything other than maintenance on a car once I get started.

OK i worked ALL DAY on the wiring. I finally ripped all the wires and switches from under the dash out, and started fresh with new toggle switches and got a new fuse box that uses the modern fuses. It was exhausting, but all the lights work now. Only thing missing is the horn, i can't find the one i took out of the beetle, so i'll have to grab another one, those are cheap.

Its pretty much street legal now.

 it does stand out in a crowd.

Its pretty cool. Everyone that sees it driving by can't help but smile. Kids point and yell to their parents. It just makes people happy. I doubt if i'd get this much attention if i drove around in a Ferrari.

One thing missing..... get a nice colorfull bikini top to hang off the roll bar.

Im thinking about stiching up my own, but just a black vinyl one. I want it easily removable, because going with the top wide open is sort of the point.

Here is a BIG tip for you on the stock carbs. If it will not idle after setting for a few months, remove part #25A from this diagram and clean out the small holes in it with carb cleaner and high pressure air.....it will be all better when put back together....The buggy looks nice too!

Thanks, i'll remember that! It seems to be idling pretty well. Still has an exhaust leak that i can't chase down, i have tightened everything and still has it. I can only hear it when its under load, so its hard to diagnose. :embarrassed:
