Charlottesville

I guess Trump finally spoke out. At this point, whatever.

Trump has backed himself into a corner with his rhetoric and his associations...if he had spoken out immediately with a full force condemnation he risked alienating whatever base he has left...by taking the approach he did, saying little then waiting, he gave the Nazis time to maneuver themselves into a position where they could claim "he's just doing it because the press is making him look bad, he doesn't really mean it"...

Listening to everybody, Trump should of spoke out 2 or 3 days ago. WTF he should of spoke out BEFORE the election.

I rest my case.
The first few minutes captures the the essence. Viewing the entire segment is challenging at times, but it is important to witness all sides. I shouldn't be shocked at how ignorant and hateful some people are, yet it still remains difficult to digest.

In the absence of the antifa, all those baptist preachers would've gotten the shit beat out of them.
Yes, the only group that was there to stand between the KKK carrying torches to the black church and the clergy inside.
The police weren't there.
The democrats weren't there.

Horrifying and tragic.

I think that some people also may be bamboozled by the myth of Lee as the "good Confederate" and "not really a real racist."

There's be a lot of memory weirdness around rehabilitating Lee's reputation. So you can see why people might be confused.

Because he was a "good slave owner," just like TJ and ol' Wooden Teeth Washington.

Jefferson and Washington have considerable accomplishments and notoriety beyond slave-owning. Lee's sole claim to fame is his willingness to own slaves and murder anyone who would oppose that.

It's a subtle distinction.

I think it's most people who don't want to see monuments to him come down.

I think protest like this are killing any chance of his legacy not being tied to entirely to slavery.

A copy & paste from one of my more scholarly friends.

During the Civil War, both sides showed up armed; guess which side was defending actual freedom? During the Revolution, two sides came armed for battle. Guess which side fought for liberty? When Americans met Germans on the battlefield in WWII, they were fighting against Nazis. Many were the grandfathers of the human rot who today carry the flags and symbols of a diseased regime their grandfathers fought and died honorably to end. Shall I continue? The false equivalency here is staggering. And, where, oh, where is our great champion of peace in the WH? No where. He's too busy golfing to care. But takes a minute out of his nouveau riche schedule to read a teleprompter and then bash the media some more.

Yep: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/06/the-myth-of-the-kindly-general-lee/529038/
The Myth of the Kindly General Lee
The legend of the Confederate leader’s heroism and decency is based in the fiction of a person who never existed.

and what I found in my newsfeed earlier today. False equivalencies are easy to make when they fit your agenda:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Lenin,_Seattle
