Charlottesville

Richard is a friend of mine. I really don't like doing politics online but I felt like I had to answer this response to my reposting of Dan Rather's comments of today.

What a shit time this is.

I honestly don't understand any of this & I'm concerned there are no practical answers to how we as country pull back from some of this extreme intolerance and hate fueled self-righteousness that makes it an acceptable option to commit violence against someone who has different views than yourself.

There is no way to pull back from it. The horrifying truth is that the only way to stop crap like this is to exterminate the kinds of people who do it and to feel satisfied in that act.

The problem lies in defining which people get exterminated. It is an ethical and practical catch 22.

I am not ok with extermination talk about anyone. Bring to justice, kill in a fight, things like that could become necessary I suppose. I sure hope not regarding outright fighting or killing. But it might be necessary. But extermination connotes something entirely different.

I guess Trump finally spoke out. At this point, whatever.
Trump has backed himself into a corner with his rhetoric and his associations...if he had spoken out immediately with a full force condemnation he risked alienating whatever base he has left...by taking the approach he did, saying little then waiting, he gave the Nazis time to maneuver themselves into a position where they could claim "he's just doing it because the press is making him look bad, he doesn't really mean it"...

What a clusterfuck.

I'm probably going to counter protest in College Station next month if the Unite The Right group comes through with their event. I'm currently taking snappy slogans ideas for t-shirts. My current favorites are:
The Nazis lost, get over it.
Have you no shame? At least wear a hood.
America: Fighting fascism since 1941

"I guess I only like to hear the other side when there is an actual other side that is rational and intelligent. "

And this is indeed the problem. There's no such thing as "alternative facts." It's simple lies and horseshit - but with a twist: these folks have turned it into gospel. Espousing patently untruth as gospel is cultism, and when you're willing to commit violence to defend your untrue gospel, you're not "someone with a different point of view," you're a fucking sociopathic danger.

Fascist movements have at their core the emotional manipulation of their followers -- because it's much easier to control people who no longer feel attached to reason. When it comes to the death penalty, there are two sides to the debate. When it comes to immigration laws, there are two (actually hundreds) of sides to that conversation.

But when it comes to strapping up, and marching in the streets with torches while chanting dehumanizing slogans, there aren't two sides. There's one: you're a danger, and need to be controlled.

Good news. It has been cancelled by the university!
