Baseball 2018

Looks like the Nats have folded. Matt Adams to the Cardinals and Daniel Murphy to the Cubs.

Well, yeah, but today they officially conceded. They should have sold before the deadline and actually gotten something to build on.

Well, you're going to have to deal with it for another two years. Mike Rizzo signed a contract extension in April.

The Rockies just put together a rather impressive streak. 46 games in a row against teams above .500 (at the time of the game). A brutal stretch and they went 30-16. Unfortunately, as tight as the NL is this season, one bad losing streak and they could be out of the playoff race. But it is making for a very interesting last 6 weeks for the NL. With the Dodgers slowly getting healthy again I'm not optimistic the Rocks can win the West, but if their pitching keeps it up they might just do it.

From a Metsian perspective, it's Rizzo because the Lerners give him lots of money to spend. But I'd be interested to hear just how Wilponian they are.

The Lerner's won't pony up for a manager. They think it's a waste of money, which is why they hired Martinez and Dusty before him. It seems to be the thing in DC, see Ted Leonsis not retaining the Stanley Cup champion coach. It is pretty well discussed in the local media at how Rizzo's hands are tied by the Lerners, but I'm not baseball expert. I've really only paid attention to it since I moved back to DC.

To be truthful, baseball has always been boring, but this year it's become apparent even to the aficionados. I still enjoy watching the occasional game, however, because it's relaxing.

We have different interpretations of boring. To me, soccer is the most boring event since paint drying.

The most impressive thing about the Rockies' streak is they did it against good teams. Every team they played, at least at the time they played them, was a contender. If anything, their schedule is easier going forward. It'll be tight, but they have a legitimate shot at the Wild Card.

They're right, it is a waste of money.

Weren’t you telling me they could never win with Dusty at the helm?

Yes, because Dusty has a history of destroying pitchers and overvaluing aging stars to the detriment of young talent. That's not a "pay more money for better managers" problem, that's a "don't let Dusty Baker be your manager" problem.

But that’s the point. When you won’t pay, your left with Dusty

Well that's not true at all. Dusty made $4 million in two years. That's a lot for a manager. Martinez will only make that if the Nats pick up his extension at the end of his third year.
