2023 concert thread

Yeesh. That's serious commitment. Denver (6 hours) is my limit these days and even that's super rare.
Well I'm going to see a long time friend that lives in Huntsville and is going to the show so it is a special occasion.
My real limit is about 3 hours and even then I'd probably get a hotel room for the night.

Yeah, Santa Fe is an hour so that's doable. But Taos is 2.5 hours and we always get a room. It's just baked into the cost of seeing the show.

Imarhan brought it to Santa Fe tonight in a big way.

This'll be TL/DR, but here it goes...

So, for the last month we've spent more time in upstate NY than home as my mother-in-law was passing. She passed last week and her service was last Saturday.
I've known this woman for 30+ years. No her, no Jill. No Jill, no sons...no family. No family, no life.

Anyway, this is why I couldn't get to last Sunday's Nickel /creek show @ Wolf Trap. This past week we were in RI for our annual summer vacation with my parents and our boys. This same week when Living Colour was playing 4 DMV shows including 3 close to home. Well, I thought I'd miss them, but realized we were going to be home today. Tonight was their 2nd show at the new Atlantis club in DC, smaller venue attached to the 9:30 club. I follow the band and its individual members on twitter. I've had a few "discussions" with Vernon Reid and he followed me back a few years ago. So I tweeted in response to their thank tweet for their sold out show in Leesburg yesterday if they might any extras for tonight that I could buy, expecting nothing...

Vernon liked my tweet, the band liked my tweet...the band DMed me, letting me know they'd comped me two tickets for the show. My wife just wasn't up for it, but I took a friend and they were once again phenomenal. They don't miss a beat or a note.

Just amazing. Literally EVERYTHING about this is amazing. One of my favorite bands becoming some of my favorite people.

Tonight was my first time seeing Tedeschi Trucks Band live. Wow! I feel like studio tracks did not prepare me for what to expect. Even live recordings did not compare to how they sounded in person at Red Rocks. I took my son and we were both completely blown away!

The amount of talent in that band is absolutely astounding. Five great singers that can really belt it out. A three piece brass section. Two drummer/percussionists. Bass guitar. Keys. Susan and Derek both playing electric guitar. Mike adding acoustic guitar on some songs.

I’m now ruined for other blues acts for awhile. There is no way anything else is going to hold a candle to that performance. Also, I don’t want to see TTB at any other venue. It will never sound that great somewhere else. I hope they play Red Rocks next year.

Yeah, TTB is a force. They have three amazing lead vocalists and killer backup singers (who could all also be lead singers). Susan is great blues player as well. But Derek is living, breathing, walking music...100%. I 1st saw him w/ the Derek Trucks Band opening for Eric Johnson at the Birchmere in 2001. I knew and loved his band, but they were more of an instrumental jamband on their records (pre-Mike as the lead singer). Javier Colon was their lead singer for a bit, and they were like the Allmans meets Stevie Wonder meets Middle Eastern or Indian jazz. Eric Johnson was great, but the DTB was absolutely other level.

Despite being a fan of Susan's solo stuff, I was a bit tentative about the TTB as a concept initially. I just wasn't sure how it would work, but their first album laid any concerns to rest, and they've generally been on a upward trajectory ever since. For me, it's not just blues, it's hard for any band in any genre to hang with TTB. They are a stellar ensemble that plays great music most excellently.

Caught Jason Isbell last night at Wolftrap. I took my oldest and she really liked it. Jason’s a great performer and he and Saddler are an awesome guitar duo. Was a little bummed Jimbo and Amanda weren’t with them but it was still an awesome show.

We were on the lawn at the wall right outside the shed. Stellar show for me.

Jimbo took some time to deal with some health issues...mental health I believe, based on his tweets. Amanda had a show in AZ tonight for her own tour, so the logistics were bad. That said, while I appreciate what she brings to the music, I didn't miss her. As I'll definitely be seeing them again, I'm sure I'll catch her w/ them in the future and likely feel differently.

Those songs though, are just killer. The guitaring is icing/gravy...

I think songs like If We Were Vampires would be much more powerful with her singing with him but the show was still great. First thing I did when I got home was google why Jimbo wasn’t there and yes, he checked in somewhere to deal with some mental health stuff but said he’d be back on the road again soon.

I caught Dinosaur Jr and Clutch last night at the Fillmore in Denver. We arrived as Red Fang was finishing their opening set.

I listened to some Dinosaurs Jr during college in the 80’s but have not followed their career since. I saw them live once in the early 90’s. I enjoyed their set. J Mascis has some interesting guitar effect sounds. They were very loose, reminiscent of a garage band.

I heard about Clutch a couple years ago. Hard rock, a bit stoner with some older rock influences in their sound. The lyrics often have a sense of humor which reminds me a bit of Zappa at times. They were very tight live. The drummer is phenomenal.

Thinking of hitting The Govt Mule show @ WolfTrap on the 20th and the Robert Cray Band @ the Birchmere on the 27th...tryna get the boss on board, but she's a tough one...

And here was me thinking Bruce would be the epitome of my 2023 concert going. Just ordered Mrs JBJ and myself tickets for Busted in October. Apparently Hanson are supporting. :embarrassed:

Black Pink was doing a thing at the American Dream Mall while we were there. I don't think the group was actually there but there was a DJ playing their stuff and there was a HUGE crowd dancing and really getting into it. It was pretty cool to see. Everyone was having a great time. Lots of skimpy anime style outfits on display.
Heading to Huntsville Wednesday to see the Pumpkins Thursday at the amphitheater.

Los Lobos brought it to Santa Fe tonight. Nothing has changed, these guys are still beasts. David, Louie, and Cesar are all criminally underrated players.

Long time fan of the band and only finally got to see them live last year as part of the TTB Wheels of Soul 2023 Tour. While they were great, David didn't play at the Wolf Trap show, apparently he wasn't feeling well. So I still need to see the full band. Again, they were excellent, but not at full band strength. This picture alone makes me jealous.

I think that was maybe my 9th or 10th Los Lobos show. Between living in New Mexico and living in Nashville — places they hit at least once a year, sometimes more — it's been possible to catch them pretty regularly without trying too hard. I do think it would be really weird to see them play without David though. They had someone filling in on bass for Conrad last weekend, I guess he's recovering from knee surgery.

I just love them. They are more of a band, a cohesive telepathic unit, than just about anyone else I can think of. They draw from so many different cultural wells and they can spin it on a dime. It's kind of crazy how sophisticated their thing is and David in particular is a hero-level player. That guy's sensibility is so refined and tasteful.
