2023 concert thread

Decided to go to see Govt Mule at Wolf Trap on Sunday. Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience opened. All around an excellent show...

Another little tale to go along with it though...

I head out & call the box office on the way, because they stopped selling tix online at this point. Once at the venue I head to Box Office to buy a ticket, not sure if I was gonna buy a cheap shed seat or just buy a lawn ticket. There's a guy trying to sell an extra he has, but wants cash...which I didn't have...so I ask if he does venmo. He doesn't, but his wife does, so we start trying to figure it out. We can't find her & he says, "You know what..." and hands me the ticket. Another show for the price of gas.

The Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience...if you're a fan of the band and get a chance, these guys were excellent. Five piece, with the 5th being a keyboard/guitar player that allowed them to cover all the parts. The singer was key, spot on Plant.

Govt Mule are just amazing. Warren Haynes is just a pure conduit for music. They played six originals (3 from their latest album and they are great), then they went Dark Side of the Mule. Not, straight Pink Floyd covers, but all the parts you expect from the tunes are there. Here's the setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/.../filene-center-at-wolf-trap...
I recommend that all my Floyld-fan friends, see these guys doing Dark Side of the Mule if you can. It's not an every year thing, but it is something they seem to do every few years. Or just go see them live doing their stuff, you won't be disappointed.

I love that the ticket situation worked out the way that it did. We gave away two passes to the Telluride bluegrass festival last year and that felt good.

Pumpkins were great. Billy's voice is going to give out before their tour ends. No more concerts slated for this year for me.
Oh, my son went and saw JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown last week. Said it was fantastic.

While it's never "fun" to eat the cost of tix, if you can pass them on and make someone else's day/night that mitigates most (if not all of the sting).

Ima try to hit Wolf Trap again to see Shakti. I've been a McLaughlin fan for 30+ years, but haven't had the chance to see him. I don't want to add him the coulda, woulda, shoulda list of artists.

Though not probably relevant to most of the folks here, I saw Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA on the Scaring The Hoes tour last night. There was no advertised opener, so didn't know what to expect there. Turns out it was Kenny Mason, a rapper from Atlanta; I had heard of his name somewhere before but knew nothing about him. Considering he wasn't (to my knowledge) advertised, the crowd was pretty warm to him and he sounded good. Danny and Peggy did a few off their duo album together, then just JPEG solo stuff, back to duo stuff, Danny solo, and finally some more duo stuff to finish up. It flowed well and let each have a break, so it seemed to be a good structure. I don't know a ton of Danny's solo stuff, I need to rectify that; he sounded great. I believe he was in rehab when their album released, so it's good to see him doing well. Peggy just has endless energy, he doesn't stop playing to the crowd, jumping on and off the stage.

Funny part of the show - JPEGMAFIA has a song called BALD, and he set it up by saying "This is the part of the show where I look out at all the people, and see all the beautiful heads of hair. Not me, though, i'm bald as fuck! So where's all my Jeff Bezos cut motherfuckers at?!" Que everyone around me pointing me out and patting me on the back.

So, I went back to Wolf Trap for Shakti w/ Bela Fleck opening. Guy approached me as I headed to the box office. He had an extra ticket for Row D aisle pair that he was looking to move at any cost. Told him I was just gonna buy a lawn ticket for $35...would that work? He said sure and we went it. I gave him $50 because these are $115 seats before any fees.

Bela Fleck opened, solo banjo. I know how it sounds, but Bela is a monster. I didn't know all the tunes, but he did play:
- Blackbird (Beatles)
- St. Thomas (I think and heard someone say so as well)
- Imagine
- Martha My Dear
- Rhapsody in Blue...9 minute version that was mind blowing

Shakti was amazing. I'm not particularly familiar with their music, but McLaughlin is a player I've loved and admired for decades. What he can still do on guitar is amazing at any age, but for an 80-81 year old to still have that level of facility...cheezits cripes... And the rest of the band were just stellar. So glad I finally got to see John and am now Shakti fan that will dive into their work.

We've got Peter Gabriel in Sept, Queen in Oct, and Brett Goldstein and maybe DMB in Nov to wrap up our concert season this year.

Gotta say during my mother-in-law's illness and after her passing, the power of live music is undeniable. It has been extremely therapeutic.

Bela is indeed a monster. I got on board in college and saw the Flecktones when that first album hit with "The Sinister Minister." It was only later when I started getting hip to the modern bluegrass world and going to festivals that I realized Bela is one of the gods on Olympus.

100,000,000%

It's so funny to think how genres seem to imbue personality on some musicians. Bela could rightly be a real prig, but he's ridiculously humble and even deferential. I know that he absolutely knows he's a great banjo player and overall musician, but it doesn't stop him from being reverential to other great musicians, especially his heroes.

He referred to his set as esoteric solo banjo music. Then he said it was okay, because part of gig was to make Shakti sound even better by comparison.

I had two bitchy little whines about the show though:
1) No one came out and jammed w/ Bela...nor did Bela get invited to jam w/ Shakti
2) despite getting a great seat for less than half the price, where I sat John's hands were blocked by some unknown (to me) clay pot potential percussion instrument next to Vinayakram that he never used.

That said, the lack of sit-ins certainly didn't diminish the show and I got to see John do his thing on the monitor above and to the right of the stage.

John was playing one of new PRS guitars, prolly the prototype, an d I know he's been plugging into a laptop or similar device running something like Amplitude for at least a decade at this point.

Not a concert, but I just picked up a pair of tickets to see Marc Maron in November.

Also on the calendar:

Black Joe Lewis
Bombino
Milk Carton Kids

Relevant to me! My son went and saw them a few weeks ago and said it was great. I wasn't allowed to go because his friends were going. Stupid dumb jerk face. Just kidding. Every show he has been to in his life I've been there. It was time to cut him loose. I did want to go though.

I’ve got a weekend coming up that may kill me.

Fri - Gov’t Mule
Sat - Drive-By Truckers
Sun - Dropkick Murphy’s

all in Charlottesville

Even though I just saw them at Wolf Trap, I'm very looking to seeing Govt Mule again doing a full set of their tunes. They're so damned good.

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to them. I planned on going to see DBT and one of my friends suggested going to the Govt Mule show the night before, so I said sure. Then a few days later, I remembered I was going to see Dropkick sometime in C’ville and it turns out it was the same weekend.

Super fun evening tonight — we got up close and personal for set with Black Joe Lewis that was recorded for the Emmy nominated PBS series Bands of Enchantment. This episode is supposed to air in January so be on the lookout.

So, we saw Peter Gabriel at Cap1 on Wednesday, which was also our 26th anniversary..

While it was surprising (on one hand, but completely understandable on the other) for me, Peter Gabriel was NOT sold out at Cap1 last night. I noticed a coupe of days ago that better seats that initially cost more than we could/would pay of were platinum were now being sold for the same price we paid for our 200 section seats. They also shifted the 300 seats to keep the smaller than hoped for crowd more centered. The crowd was more tame than we were for the Rock Paper Scissors show in 2016

Regardless of all that, Peter was amazing again. And his band...just killer. Tony Levin's always awesome and David Rhodes created all those cool guitar parts, but Manu Katche was just on it ALL night. He had a small string section with Ayanna Witter-Johnson on cello and featured vocals (some keys), Marina Moore on violin, viola, and backing vocals. Don-E covered the extra keyboards parts and layers (and backing vocals), especially when Peter was out front moving quite well for an overweight 73 year-old. But again his voice is still their. Yes, he paces himself for a two+ hour show, but it's clear he can still hit all the notes while not hesitating to hold back and let the others carry a bit.

There was also a horn/wind section:
- Richard Evans playing flute, penny whistle, and Native American style flute, as well as acoustic and electric guitars
- Josh Shpak on trumpet, french horn, and sumfin else I forgot.

They could've done some DMB covers...

Also, Peter refuses to be a nostalgia act. He played what I believe is the entirety of the impending I/O album while also playing many of hits and several a deep cut or two.

The stage set, lighting, and performance were also absolutely incredible. If you get a chance, hit this tour...it's unlikely he'll do another on this scale.

Queen at CFG in Baltimore. They were EXCELLENT!

Brian sounds like a kid on guitar and his vocals...ageless musician.
Roger remains an underrated drummer AND singer.
Lambert is an awesome singer...I had no idea until I watched the doc a few years ago, but he was off the charts.

This year of seeing living legends has been spectacular. Music is special and powerful in a way that I can't express.

Oct 16 2023, Peter Gabriel, Ball Arena, Denver….

My brother and I had two floor seats near the back that were about $200 each. The sound was surprisingly decent even back there. And the visuals looked great.

Our friends had six seats close to the front that were nearly $600 each. At intermission, one of our friends came back to get us because he noticed two seats in front of him were not occupied. So, we got to watch the 2nd half of the show from the expensive seats. The sound was much better up there.

The pics are from both vantage points.

JRockbridge,

We were on the side, closer to the back on the right of the stage (from viewer perspective). The view was a bit angled, but still spectacular stage and lighting design. Very theatrical and evocative performance. And, again, I love that Peter isn't just doing the hits. He has new work and he's going to make sure we hear it. I'm ready for more music and another show whenever Peter wants to share.
