I went to the Church in Santa Fe last week. I thought about posting and just didn't yet.

Not the most amazing show. First, the playing of "Starfish" was .... OK. They seemed sick of doing the material, although "Reptile" was tremendous. They took a break for a half hour or so, and returned to do a 'regular' set.

The playing during that set was far better and more energized; it was almost like two different bands.

Unfortunately, Steve Kilbey began to complain about the venue. It would be a long explanation, so I'll just cut to the chase: it's an 'unusual' place (www.meowwolf.com) and apparently he found the acoustics poor. After about 40 minutes, he swore, set down his bass, and said "I just won't do this any more. There would've been more, but this stage is killing me."

I've attended probably in the neighborhood of high four figures worth of small venue shows, and probably worked low four figures of same. They played over an hour and a half, the ticket was $16. Had he simply smiled and said "good night!" I think it'd have been fine. But the nasty edge - combined with what I'd call very minimal effort to correct the situation - came off very poorly.

This is compounded in our part of the world -- some folks had driven 6-8 hours to be at the show. And as odd as it might sound, his attitude really came off as disrespectful to the audience (who had been somewhat embarassingly worshipful given how 'meh' some of the performance was).

Hopefully you have a better time.

Wow. That's a shame. Unfortunately, stuff like that happens a lot. I'm surprised by your... surprise. There's almost always a back story that involves shady booking agents, ineptitude, poor communication etc that leaves the band or artist flummoxed by what greets them. It sucks for the audience for sure, but more often than not, the artist is trying to make the best of a bad situation.
Promoters and booking agents are the worst. I was all set to head up to Huntington Beach this Saturday for a big festival show that lists one of my favorite bands as on the bill. Unfortunately, talking to the drummer who is currently in the UK (with the rest of the band), he told me they'd been booked without their knowledge and that the cost of doing the trip/show by far outweighed the fee. In other words, they aren't playing. Still no info changes on the official band listing for the show. Some folks will be really pissed.

Next show I've got lined up is the Lemonheads in a couple of weeks. I saw Evan Dando stumble through a show many years ago (with a hostile and equally impaired Vic Chesnutt opening) and I can't say I have high expectations. We'll see.

@dmn23 I'm old friends with Evan's sister. I hope it goes well. I'm staying home that night. If I could, let me exhort you to see Sebadoh June 10. They can also be shitty, but as time goes on, often turn in great performances. And can Lou ever write a tune.

@OGG Yeah, I know what you're saying, but actually ABQ tends to be a great host city. Not too much drama, easy places to play, smaller but cool crowds ... and Meow Wolf just has shitloads of money (it's the pet project of the Game of Thrones guy, who lives in Santa Fe) and has a decent reputation with people. Another band at the Launch Pad? Not surprised. A bunch of old guys getting rock star treatment at a nice-y joint? Nah, he was just being a shit. He also spoke with real disrespect to a couple of his bandmates, which is always a turnoff to me. I'd add that his long winded stories between tunes were like the anti-Robyn Hitchcock (not charismatic, not interesting, not entertaining). It just didn't go over well at all.

My biggest hope for you is that they put some ass into the performances of "Starfish" tunes.

I've got them June 13th.

The Church were bloody fantastic last night. Start to finish. No bad attitudes, no Kilbey being a shit, just a great show with great performances by all. My ONLY nitpick was "Reptile" because somehow, despite 3 guitarists, bass and drums, it seemed like the bottom fell out during each chorus. Very weird. It was very sparse during those parts.

Highlights:

All three guitarists using an Ebow at various times, one song featuring two at the same time! One of those Ebows was at least 30 years old and had the old school frame and red LED vs the Blue of the 2nd generation models. Ya don't see those every day. Having David J. (Haskins) tap me on the shoulder to say hi during the encore and standing with me for the remainder. It was good to see him home again after years away.
