2018 Concert Thread

My g/f bought tix to see James Taylor with Bonnie Raitt as the opening act last night (5/11). Unfortunately Bonnie has some emergency surgery and is not on this leg of the tour. I would have liked to see Bonnie again. The first time I saw her was in 1971 at Trenton State U. for 50 cents in the student union bldg. My friend and I hitch hiked from Phila. where we lived to see the show. By the way James Taylor was pretty good.

I went and saw Stryper last night :) Didn't get conked on the head by a bible though :(

They had a local band, Trixy Tang, open for them. I've seen Trixy Tang open for a couple of other acts here locally (Stryper included) and the other times I've seen them they had two guitarists, and played hair metal. I guess the singer fired those guys and they have one guitarist, who while maybe not being quite the 'fast shreder' that one of the other old guitarists was, is certainly a better guitarist overall and way more entertaining to watch. And this time their original stuff sounded more Guns & Roses like than hair metal, which suits the singers voice a bit better.

The guitarist COULD shred, don't get me wrong, but he was more '70s in his approach to soloing, very melodic and always landed on the right notes. Except for their last song, the only cover they did last night 'Turn Up The Radio'. He played everything right, all the little licks and everything, until the hammer-on part of the solo where he was so far off tune it wasn't even funny. I'm not sure what happened, if he started on the wrong string or what. I've never seen someone play that well only to flub something that badly. Still he didn't let it show, and I'd bet half the audience didn't even know...

Fun Fact from last nights show: Michael Sweet's fly was open almost the whole show  The last song they did, before coming back out for the encore, he gave his guitar to his tech and just sang, and his fly was zipped up, so someone must've told him :embarrassed:

Saw Mingo Fishtrap on Tuesday. Anyone familiar with these guys? They put on a fun show with a funky Mowtown vibe.

I can see now why a band like Kobra And The Lotus would agree to be on the opening slot for Texas Hippie Coalition.

If your band can bring the goods live, and KatL certainly did, your band can make a bunch more fans than if you went out on tour with a headliner who's fans already know who you are. I was right on the rail almost dead center, and there were a bunch of drunk THC fans to my left and right behind me. Hearing them talk, between bands (there were 6 bands altogether) they had no idea who KatL were. By the end of the KatL set, they were all screaming and yelling for KatL, and were heading off to the merch booth to buy cd's and t-shirts. I would bet that this opening tour has brought them a good many new fans :)

No shows coming up until August.

August 4th - MindMaze :)

August 11th - Night Demon ( Achtung! @VoidTerraFirma have you heard of them? )

And either September 11th, 12th, or 13th, all three dates are middle of the week, Amorphis :)

It just depends on if I want to see them at Harpo's in Detroit (2-hour drive), Fort Wayne, IN (90 minute drive) or Joliet, IL (2.5+ hour drive).

Okay. I think the whole season has been booked now.

Steven Tyler was a circus in terms of people. It was insane. He puts on an energy packed show and his band, Loving Mary know what they’re doing and having fun doing it.

The opener, The Sisterhood Band was probably okay if the audio didn’t suck. Still, not my kind of music but they’re making music. It was a little odd that they played to a kick drum track, but they were so well in time, I was trying to see if one of them had something rigged on their boot and was actually triggering the sound.

Last night was Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers
Killer band. Fun to watch. Kind of hired guns except for two guys, but they were tight and I appreciated the playing even when the song didn’t hold my interest.
I recognised two songs.
They did End of the Innocence which Bruce co-wrote with Don Henley and he went off on a noodle-fest that made the band stop playing and the conversation level in the crowd go up to the point where the din of conversation was more noticeable than the music. It was really awkward.

The Wood Brothers did well, but their songs have a lot to with rivers and dying....
The drummer was impressive. He played a harmonica hanging on a stand, and a full keyboard off the side of his kit - while drumming.
His kit was a snare, kick, high hat, crash, ride, roto-tom, mini washboard, and a frying pan.
He also came out front for a few songs and played percussion on a beat up student guitar with no strings.

We caught the following sets at Telluride:

Sam Bush Band (with Peter Rowan)
St. Paul and the Broken Bones
Chris Thile
I'm With Her (Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan)
Punch Brothers

Caught Melissa Etheridge last night. I've never been a huge fan, but my sister is, so I took her and my mom to the show. I was impressed with the performance - she tore it up pretty damn well. Hated the venue, though - she was at Jack Casino in Cincinnati, and instead of being any sort of proper theater, it was just a big hotel conference room with a stage at the end.

Next up for me is Gov't Mule and Magpie Salute in August - super psyched for that one!

Melissa Etheridge played in a 16th century church here. About 150 people (I think I was the only straight male, and boy did I get a bunch of dirty looks). She was terrific.
