2018 Concert Thread

I went with a couple of buddies to see Cursive, Meat Wave, and Campdogz at the local indie rock club a couple of weeks ago. We were mainly there to see Meat Wave who put out my favorite album last year. Campdogzz opened. I wasn't sure what to expect from them, but was pleasantly surprised. They were a female-fronted psychedelic indie-rock band. The singer had a great voice. She played guitar along with two other guitarists in the band. While that can often make for a mess, the arrangements were well done, with everybody playing in their own space. Meat Wave played next and just killed it. They were totally on and just blew the other bands away for energy and intensity. We stayed for a few of Cursive's songs, but they were just OK. I was kind of aware of them before hand and had never been overly impressed with their stuff.

I like the guy playing the SG. Just flipped a right handed guitar over, did change the stringing.

Spock's Beard/Flower Kings on Friday, looking forward to that.

Hoping SB doesn't play too much from their last album though as I don't really like that one a whole lot. :embarrassed:

@OGG

The friend request you got Sunday night was the direct result of me being at the show and I was going to message you, but realized we weren't Facebook friends.

Yeah, we used to be but I had a huge FB purge a while back that unfortunately inflicted heavy collateral damage. Sorry. I'm still trying to re-friend as many forumites as I can as I realize they aren't there anymore. Glad you reached out.

Jason is a consummate entertainer for sure. His music isn't and never really has been my style. I tell him all the time that his music sucks :)

But, that kid is the most talented mofo I've ever met. Greatness just pours of him on demand. His ability to improvise and pull shit out of thin air is just disgusting! I totally want to kick him in the taint sometimes because it's so natural and effortless for him.

He's also a genuinely awesome guy.

Just pulled the trigger on this:

Saw Fleetwood Mac last night here in Phoenix. I'd seen a couple clips of the new band playing "Rhiannon" and "Go Your Own Way" and both sounded good, so I expected a good show. To be fair, I was never a big fan of the Buckingham/Nicks version of the band and was hoping the addition of Neil Finn and Mike Campbell might breathe some life into the band. As it turned out, even with almost a dozen musicians on stage, they sounded more like a Fleetwood Mac tribute band than a finely honed act. The two songs they had down were "Rhiannon" and "Go Your Own Way" and they closed the show with those, but it was too late. Neil Finn and Stevie Nicks singing together was a disaster, Mike Campbell stumbled a few times on some of the solos and Mick Fleetwood was working way too hard trying to be funny. All in all, I was happy that my Wife enjoyed the show, but I wish I'd saved the money and bought a Tonewood amp instead.

Just back from seeing Flower Kings and Spock's Beard in Oslo tonight. First show on their tour together for the Inside Out label 25 year anniversary.

The Flower Kings were just incredible. Brilliant.
Their set for the hour and 20 minutes they played? 5 songs.

Spock's Beard were a bit disappointing. Quite rusty, weird setlist, and Alan Morse in particular had an off night sadly. Hopefully they're better for the remainder of this tour. Their touring drummer Mike Thorne (from SAGA) was spot on though.

Still well worth catching for the progheads over here in Europe.

Generation Axe. Vai/Malmsteen/Wylde/Bettencourt/Abasi. Graded!

The whole crew comes out and trades/soundchecks with Hocus Pocus. Vai is the conductor. B+

Abasi: I get why people dig him. He’s a mashup of Stanley Jordan and Meshuggah, with a few tasty sweeps. B
Bettencourt: First half is acoustic and banter. Tremendous technique. Plugs in and does 15 minutes of Extreme/shred with vocals. He’s a pro. B+
Wylde: His set is a 10 minute Into The Void and a 10 minute War Pigs with full vocals Goes into the crowd three times. He looks like a Viking and he plays a blue guitar. Pentatonic assault. I was completely entertained. A+
Vai: Vai is the alien, the mutant, the morning star. A
Malmsteen: He’s lost weight and looks fit. Full complement of pick-kicking and Strat-tossing. Shreds without regard, cartoonish and unhinged. Yngwie forever. D+

I just got Billy Joel tickets. I wanted Stones and McCartney tickets until I saw the prices. The Stones are playing a football stadium and the seats with a half decent view and sound are over $400.00. Fuck you.
McCartney was even more. We just saw Fleetwood Mac and for half decent seats they were $200.00. The same seats for McCartney were $460.00 Fuck you too!
How much of this is the artist's greed?

The crazy part to me, is those guys are so rich and old, they won't live to spend the money they make on this tour. On the other side, I get it. If I was that old, it would take a lot of money to get me to work.

I caught Reckless Kelly last night—my last concert of the year. I'd seen them in Nashville, but not since I moved back to NM.

In a fair and just world these guys should be fucking huge on the country scene. Great songs, hella tight, and David Abeyta is a super tasty player (ALL THE COLLINGS. GIVE ME.). Any "country" band who regularly covers Alejandro Escovedo, Slaid Cleaves, Richard Thompson, Dire Straits, Tom Waits, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Corb Lund, and CCR clearly has taste for days. These guys are always a great show and if it sounds like they might be your thing then check 'em out next time they're in town.
