2018 Concert Thread

@Lerxst if you haven't seen BMSR previously, you may want to arrange to stand where you can get shots of the video backdrop behind the band.

NSFW.

Just saying.

Saw them last month.
They had a screen behind the band and a net like thing in front of the stage with different patterns and scenes projected on it. It created a super trippy multi-dimensional effect.

:: sad face ::

Things have changed. Last time I saw them (2014? 15?) there was .... copious amounts of hilarious but very NSFW stuff in the projections.

Not a 2018 show, but taking my wife to see an acoustic show with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt. Have seen Lyle several times before, but have not seen John in person. I think the combination sounds like a fun evening! Downtown Boise at the Morrison Center. Should be nice!

Huh, interesting. My tix are billed as an acoustic evening as well, but different partner.

Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Palace Theater in Columbus last night. Good show, and it was Susan’s birthday, complete with the cake and the song in the second set.

Not being that much into them (their last studio album is all I know), it was still a really good show, complete with perhaps the best live mix I have ever heard from any band - every instrument could be heard, and no boomy bass/drums. Susan’s singing was impeccable, and Trucks was, of course, brilliant as well. Having said all that:

* First set was 55 minutes, then intermission- for 30 minutes. 30? Really? Second set was about 1:15, though.
* Only one song (“Right On Time”) from their most recent studio album, and probably one that’s one of my least liked.
* I know that Susan is an uber-experienced performer and player, but I really don’t need to hear her do any guitar solos, at least in this band context. I was also surprised that she played nothing but a LP Standard, as I always thought she was a Fender stalwart...anyway, she can play, but her solos were pretty basic and didn’t really add much, especially when she was playing them with (mostly) a clean tone.
* The criticism that I occasionally see with them is that they are pretty workmanlike live, and not that exciting. Granted, at this stage of my life, I’m not necessarily looking for a visual spectacular from great musicians, but...yeah, I can see where they get that label. There was no banter other than “Thank you...” after some tunes, and the birthday thing kinda loosened them up, but other than a few smiles here and there, it just seemed like they were all business, like they weren’t having that much fun (except for tromboneist Elizabeth Lea - she was on fire for quite a few tunes)...having said THAT:
* There were two or three songs where Susan put the guitar down, and she seemed to be much more into the vocal performance without the guitar strapped on - almost like it was an albatross. These were the songs where I thought she raised the bar, and wish she would have left the guitar behind more often.

All in all, I would go se them again, if only to hear them do some of their other tunes (they mix up the setlists every show), and the wife really loves them.

Saw a reformed Humble Pie Friday. Music-wise, very entertaining, but the singer left quite a bit to be desired. No original members.

Can't stay away from a Richard Thompson gig. I'm flying to Nashville in a couple of weeks, catching the show, then getting on a plane and heading back home the next morning.

They replaced the original keyboard player in May and then dropped the new guy a month ago and went out as a trio.

They did a great job with song selection and filling in the space left absent by the keys. Played nearly the entire new album & basically all of Lightening at the Door, 3-5-7, Bruce Lee, Alabaster, Dirt Preachers and a few more.

Just saw Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. Super tight and very professional show. Great visuals and pyrotechnics.

2018 has been a bust for me so far in regards to concerts.

Had tickets to see Jason Isbell in February. Got to the show and had a bad anxiety attack during the opener and left before Isbell started.

Then had 5th row tickets for Allison Krauss and had appendicitis that day so spent that evening in the hospital instead.

I've got tickets for Jason Mraz on Sunday. Hopefully my gall bladder and other organs are up to the challenge.

Mraz is known for inviting fans on stages to get punched or stabbed in the gall bladder. It's a little something he does to personalize the show and get the crowd fired up.

Just request a punch to the face or nuts instead when you get called up. And the bloodlust of the crowd will still be satisfied.

I'm ecstatic to report that I survived Jason Mraz. Had a great time, even. It was a fun concert. Not only was the singing and playing very nice, but he threw in some interpretive dance and plenty of comedy too.

He brought a local girl up on stage for a duet and she brought the place to its feet.

@OGG

The friend request you got Sunday night was the direct result of me being at the show and I was going to message you, but realized we weren't Facebook friends.
