The Biking Thread

Quickie tonight, but nice. I really like my gravel bike for not super rough rides. I just get places faster.

I had to give up my bike for now. I stared having nasty knee problems this year. I saw a doctor today who said it seems to just be cartilage wearing away and that 6–8 weeks of physical therapy will fix it. So hopefully I’ll be back on the bike by July and I can enjoy cycling when it’s 95° out. I love cycling in the hot Colorado sun with no humidity. It’s like being in a sauna but you don’t feel sweaty.

Interesting that your doc says some PT will fix it. I have some damaged or worn out cartilage on the inside end of my right femur, that got messed up after a meniscus tear last year. First real knee problems to speak of. But wasn’t getting the sense that PT would fix it, but would just help me hold on until I need a replacement someday.

Are you having problems while riding? Might be your setup if you are. I find the doctor's comments a bit suspect, was he an orthopedic specialist? PT won't do anything for cartilage wearing away although it help if your legs are not strong and the joint isn't super stable. The PT would then help things from moving around which would be less painful. But it won't put anything lost back.

I'm not a doctor but I do have lots of experience with knee problems. I have had no cartilage in my left knee for decades because of meniscus and ligament tears and riding a bike is the one thing that doesn't really bother me too much. Swimming is actually a bit worse because of the way I swim and it's a lot easier to ride for exercise than swim anyways.

I was able to ride (per my surgeon) 2 weeks after my last surgery (a 3 meniscus tear, 2nd one in my right knee). Just had to avoid hills for a couple of weeks first

I did a solo mountain bike ride on Tuesday. I'm heading out again today after work. I didn't take any singletrack pictures. I was too busy riding. Here are two tough hill climbs and a downhill that's hard to climb if you are going the opposite direction. They are on the Los Robles trail system in Southern California.
We call this Stud Hill.

Stud Two. Tougher than it looks.

I'm doing a ride today after work. It's in the Santa Monica mountains with some views of the ocean. I have been riding about every other day. Sometimes with two days between rides.

I ride a Trek Superfly full suspension cross country bike. My brother decided he wanted a longer travel trail bike, and is giving my his Niner RIP cross country full suspension bike. Its a few years old, but only has a couple hundred miles on it. It has a carbon wheel set from Dave's Wheels too. I'm stoked!

My Trek is still in great shape, so i will have two bicycles.
Here's my bro's bike that will be mine in a few weeks.

I went to hell and back again.
Climbed Hell Hill, descended Backbone Trail.
It was a tough 21 mile ride.
The wild parrots are really taking over Sycamore Canyon.
I didn't take this picture, but this is whats happening. Lots of squawking on the 6 mile ride out.

Cool Niner.

I think those are Black Hooded Parakeets. :embarrassed: We have their cousins by the thousands along the Texas coast, Monk Parakeets.

New bicycle toys. Including new tires to replace that slick you see installed which helped, along with getting my weight too far inside, lead to that road rash from really dry and loose over very hard. Hoping the additional tread provides a little bit of additional bite and forgiveness on those conditions.

and along the way, got a new bicycle quarterly and book. At least the air is relatively clean today as compared to what it has been, though it is still a little hotter than I would like. But glad to actually be able to get outside for once. It has been pretty smoky and hard to get out.

Well, that ride was fun! Not super hilly, but a little over 1000 feet of elevation gain pretty gradually. What I wanted for a day like today where the air is rated at green level but still is pretty hazy with some smoke, given that my respiratory system is already a little bothered. But, the air was pretty good and the ride was very enjoyable.

I almost joined you SVL today with the road rash (or actually it probably would have been a lot worse). Somehow on an otherwise paved road there was a bunch of gravel at the apex of a high speed turn (I was doing about 30 at the time fortunately not faster). My back wheel slipped a bit and I got a high speed wobble with a car coming towards me in the other direction...just managed to stay in my lane and not lose the bike. Good thing I'm not fast downhill

Super glad you stayed up and held a line not on a collision course! Sounds like a stay balanced, no sudden moves or turning of the bars situation, with sighs of relief after!

Got race photos in from the other weekend. It was fun! Even if I suffered a little bit as the day finished out smokier than it started and I was too deep in the day to know it. Thankfully, it wasn’t too bad a day. But a fun experience, and hope to do the next longer version next year. Maybe it will be less smoky.

It's been at least 5 years since I've been on a night ride. Luckily my light still works great.
It rained on Monday, but the trails were ready for riding(Wednesday). My sprockets stayed dry. I did see 10 toads.

Sort of looked like a potato bug. I will have to investigate what it is.
