A Rick Perry Reversal on Gutting Energy Department
The former Texas governor will address his awkward history on the issue up front in his testimony. “My past statements made over five years ago about abolishing the Department of Energy do not reflect my current thinking,” he says in his prepared remarks, adding, “In fact, after being briefed on so many of the vital functions of the Department of Energy, I regret recommending its elimination.”

Mr. Perry will also acknowledge that he has changed his views about the established science of climate change, which, in his 2010 book, “Fed Up! Our Fight to Save America From Washington,” he called a “contrived, phony mess.”

IOW, "I didn't know what the fuck I was talking about when I ran for president". I guess you gotta give him credit there.

No credit. He and the other appointees have clearly been instructed to distance themselves from previously held positions. Like Trump during the election, say whatever you need to get the position. Then do what you want.

Every other politician in history has done this. This particular class is simply being overt about it.

By all accounts, he actually had no idea what the role of the DoE was until being selected for the cabinet position & briefed...and he's admitting as much.
So he's admitting that his campaign statements about dismantling agencies was made completely ignorant of their true role & responsibilities. I give him credit for cop'in to his own ignorance. Edit: That doesn't in any way change what a bad choice he is for the cabinet position.

They just did a piece on the cbs morning show today about people's hopes and fears with the new administration.
This guy was talking about how he's starting his own heavy equipment company and is looking forward to the 'new economy'. They close with him strumming on a Santa Cruz....looks like the old economy hasn't been too bad to him either

I want to know what kind of music he actually likes. If he likes music. I can't imagine him actually enjoying music for some reason.

I have the best taste in music. We're gonna make American music GREAT again!

*whispers off stage* What are the Violent Femmes up to these days? I like that song about jerking off with tiny hands...*

Sorry if my tinfoil is showing, but I am wondering what the hell is going on while everyone is focused on the circus that is the confirmation hearings.
I mean, most of it so ridiculous that I can't imagine that anyone with an ounce of common sense would put these people forward as candidates for these positions.
I'm mainly commenting on the DeVos hearing here, but in general, it all feels like something that is intended to distract people from something else.
At times, I think "Why are they even speaking to this person?" Other times, I'm thinking "Who ties her shoes for her?"

Is just other confirmations, perhaps? Set the inane level so high that others slip under the radar?

Yeah, I watched Franken, Kaine and Warren grill her yesterday. I wouldn't be comfortable letting DeVos work the cash register at my local McDonalds.

those schools in the northwest, they need to have rifles in the principal's office to defend against those grizzly attacks.

How did we go from this:
My fellow Americans,

It's a long-standing tradition for the sitting president of the United States to leave a parting letter in the Oval Office for the American elected to take his or her place. It's a letter meant to share what we know, what we've learned, and what small wisdom may help our successor bear the great responsibility that comes with the highest office in our land, and the leadership of the free world.

But before I leave my note for our 45th president, I wanted to say one final thank you for the honor of serving as your 44th. Because all that I've learned in my time in office, I've learned from you. You made me a better President, and you made me a better man.

Throughout these eight years, you have been the source of goodness, resilience, and hope from which I've pulled strength. I've seen neighbors and communities take care of each other during the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes. I have mourned with grieving families searching for answers -- and found grace in a Charleston church.

I've taken heart from the hope of young graduates and our newest military officers. I've seen our scientists help a paralyzed man regain his sense of touch, and wounded warriors once given up for dead walk again. I've seen Americans whose lives have been saved because they finally have access to medical care, and families whose lives have been changed because their marriages are recognized as equal to our own. I've seen the youngest of children remind us through their actions and through their generosity of our obligations to care for refugees, or work for peace, and, above all, to look out for each other.

I've seen you, the American people, in all your decency, determination, good humor, and kindness. And in your daily acts of citizenship, I've seen our future unfolding.

All of us, regardless of party, should throw ourselves into that work -- the joyous work of citizenship. Not just when there's an election, not just when our own narrow interest is at stake, but over the full span of a lifetime.

I'll be right there with you every step of the way.

And when the arc of progress seems slow, remember: America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word 'We.' 'We the People.' 'We shall overcome.'

Yes, we can.

To this:
  • “I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married.”
  • “I did try and fuck her. She was married.”
  • “Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”
  • “Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”

Every Republican should be AFRAID to step out on stage and meet their constituents. People need to start demanding they be heard, and if a politician is content to just come out and keep speaking the same platitudes, they should be booed off that stage.

Can someone explain to me why affordable health care for everyone is such a terrible idea? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around why this is a controversial idea.

Affordable healthcare for everyone wouldn't be controversial. What we have in place, although it seems to indicate so by name, does not equate to affordable for everyone. Basically, it works by making it really expensive for some people so it can be affordable to others. Many of the small business people and independent contractors I know have seen tremendous cost increases and coverage decreases. I am by no means an expert on the subject but I know how it has affected a large number of people I know. Crippling in some instances. A lady I know just told me the other day the quote she got was $1800 per month with an $8000 deductible. According to my math, that's not affordable.

Basically, my opinion is that the whole thing has been a political play from the start and is not the right way to approach health care costs. Most of the reason for the costs is fraud throughout the industry both on the insurance side and the provider side. Insurance likely has a sizable lobby presence so I'm not sure any politician is going to go after them.

But instead we have a plan that sucks. The new administration wants to get rid of it and replace it with another plan that sucks. The question is will it suck more or less.
