Went for a walk round the cathedral and necropolis today.

Cathedral from the necropolis with the royal infirmary beside it

Inside the main bit. I think they started to build it in the 12th century, no idea how old the main bit is. It was the only cathedral in scotland to keep its roof after the reformation. The prodies took it over from the old church. There's a cool crypt beneath the main hall but i couldn't get any decent pics

looking over south glasgow, the Tennents Wellpark brewery is just past the graves. Thankfully they don't get their water from the run off from the graveyard, although I guess they must have done a couple of hundred years ago. Would probably make tennents taste better tbf

There are lots of cool tombs and statues in the necropolis. Mainly from rich merchants in the victorian era when glasgow got rich from the spoils of the empire

The Wisconsin State Historical Society through their H.H.Bennett Photographic Studio historic site announced a photo contest back in February. The contest asked for any type of photo involving water in Wisconsin. Problem was, entries were due March 15th. Water in Wisconsin in February and March has this habit of being hard(and cold). So with no advance notice you pretty much had to go to your files. I have no idea how many people entered but on April 15th they picked the 40 finalists. I got an email today saying I'm one of them. I entered a couple of pictures. This was one I liked the least. They liked it the most. I guess I have no taste.

A suitable jpeg for printing has to be sent to them and they will print a 11x14 print, matted and framed for the show. All 40 picture will be now display at the H.H.Bennett Studio in Wisconsin Dells from May 7th to September 30. Visitors to the Studio will vote all summer. Win or lose at the end of the summer you get your print, professionally printed and matted back. I can't remember what you get if you win.

For those of you who don't know Bennett's work, he was the inventor of the high speed shutter. People back in the 1870's thought his picture were faked. Here's his most famous picture,

Was up near Mugdock country park north of glasgow today so grabbed a couple of pictures

Looking north to Dumgoyne, a large volcanic plug. In the distance you can see the southern highlands, I think you can just see ben lomond although I'm not too sure

Southern Pacific has 2 of them and they are still in operation. the newest of the 2 was built in 1929. they really haven't built anymore since then.
the 2 were used last in 2011 to clear Donner Pass. it had 10 FEET of snow thru the pass.
PBS has a show about the event. it took them 30 hours to plow out 32 miles of track.

I know this goes back some years, but in 1952, the City of San Francisco got stuck in a snow slide in Yuba Gap. Back in those days they still used steam power on a limited basis. So they sent up one of those rotaries up ahead of a relief train. What this short video leaves out is that the first rotary was overturned and buried in another snow slide. The crews of the locomotive and the plow as well were all killed. The overturned plow is visible for a few brief seconds as the train is being pulled out. Another little detail left out was about one of the train's cooks. Seems that after they ran out of fuel to boil water, he went nuts. The story goes that he tried to jump out of the train's door.... only to find that there was a 20 foot drift blocking his way.

.

Went up to the Kilpatrick Hills, which are to the north west of Glasgow. Great day for a walk although rather hazy

They are fairly low and not much to look at by themselves but offer good views over the city and to the north towards loch lomond.

Someone not doing the stereotype any good

Recently I was thinking about retiring, OK that's not true, I'm always thinking of retiring. But I was wondering what I could do about picking up a few extra bucks without selling my soul to another job. I was taking pictures one day and I was talking to my wife about retiring. I was saying maybe I should try shooting pictures for a living. I have no interest in wedding, party, etc, type stuff but I've always liked being in the middle of the action. My wife said maybe I should take pictures for the local paper. Thinking they weren't going to hire anyone with no experience I thought maybe I could work my way into a stringer job by taking pictures and submitting them to the paper. Wednesday night a storm moved through the area and lightning struck the $5m home of one of the richest guys in the area(He owns properties with over 1600 hotel/motel rooms and the largest theme/waterpark in the area). Grabbed the Nikon and headed over to the scene. At least 6 fire departments responded through mutual aid. There was $750,000 damage. The local paper got nothing.

Front page of the local paper this morning features this shot by yours truely,

Maybe this stupid idea will work after all.

Just a suggestion, if you don't already have one I would buy a radio scanner. I have one that I use for chasing trains, and it picks up a lot of other stuff too. The one I have is an analog model, so it can't pick up my local police dept. They went to digital broadcast a few years ago. I would need a scanner capable of handling digital signals and a trunking system. Mine cost me under a hundred, but those digital ones start at about 300. Depends on what you like to follow. One minor point... radio scanners are illegal in some places, you'll have to check your local regs. Before I forget... good shot!

I intend to get a scanner once I get through my Son's wedding and have some extra money. In the meantime I'm using a phone app called Broadcastify. It let's you pick public safety broadcasts from anywhere. If I'm out of my area I can still use it.When I almost got creamed in that high speed chase in Daytona I used it to try and keep track what was going on. I can plug it into the sound system of the car so it's real clear and I can have it on the car charger at the same time. Fortunately, I have unlimited data.

Took advantage of the recent rains to capture a few flowers in the yard. After the clouds lift, you can get some great lighting.

The confederate rose tree we started from a clipping my grandfather gave us is over 16 feet tall now. It reminds me of him every day.
