And that’s exactly what Siouxsie was looking for when he joined them…I remember an old interview where she talks about auditions for a guitarist after McKay left and being irritated/frustrated with all of the bluesy/pentatonic guys. She knew John would be perfect immediately, I assume she had heard his playing with Magazine also…very much an out of the box player. His stuff with Armoury Show is fine, but really hasn’t aged as well as his two prior bands. Still makes you wonder what might’ve been if he had remained with the Banshees, they were still really peaking at that point despite the excesses of the time.I really like McKay too.
I'm not much into the McGeoch's PiL either or Armory Show, but I really love his playing with Magazine and the Banshees. Good call on his art background informing his playing. There's a very conceptual element to his playing that doesn't seem to be rooted in rock n' roll or the blues.
