This is glorious music. You may disagree, but be prepared to face my wrath.

I accidentally had two videos from the second page going at once. It took me about 30 seconds before I noticed.

The video in the OP got a little better after the first minute or so but that's not saying much.

*prepares for the pain*

So the guys in the OP can actually play their instruments well. They just choose not to.

Got it.

they're playing their instruments well and there is a structure to the music. that you cannot recognize the structure has nothing to do with them.

every musical act asks you to get on "their page" to appreciate them. the difference between them and Watt is that they're not in your house spouting misinformation and flinging poo.

An interesting thing here. Ornette Coleman actually recorded a double quartet record in the the early -60s already, with 4 players in each channel. It sounded like this:

Apparently I like this guy and never knew. :embarrassed:

Watt isn't in my house spouting misinformation and flinging poo if I don't read his posts.

Same way the video in the OP isn't making me nauseous if I don't click on it.

I did click on it. Sounded like complete rubbish. Reminded me of highschool band when everybody would be warming up doing scales and stuff just to get their instruments warmed up...everybody doing something completely unrelated and non-musical.

Yep, that's pretty much what it sounded like to me.

δηθύνων, οὐδ᾽ ἦλθον ἐναίσιμον ὡς ἐκέλευες;

if that was your high school then the band teacher was amazing.

there's obviously structure and interplay there. IMO, there's nothing "free" about it.

Look. I freely admit that I don't 'get' jazz. The OP doesn't sound like music to me. It sounds like a bunch of dudes loosening up by playing whatever comes to mind before they actually get around to playing a song.

I don't listen to music to think about it, or to make other people think I'm an intellectual. God knows I'm not.

I want my music to be big, dumb and fun.

This stuff is none of that.

there's nothing to get though. the OP is definitely music, it's just not music you like.

music/art is really simple. if i say it's music, then it is. Zappa had a great line about John Cage putting a contact microphone on his throat and gargling carrot juice. Cage says it's music, so it is. you and i might not like it or get it. but that doesn't take away from it's existence.

I love thinking about music, but at the end of the day, I wouldn't love this music nearly as much if it didn't affect me physically - listening to this isn't an exercise, it changes my mood and makes me grin like a kid in spite of myself.

I have as much respect for Cage as for any artist, really - easily one of the most creative and original musical minds of the past century. That said... most of the fun of Cage is in the concept, and I'd have a hard time imagining someone being a fan of his on a purely visceral level (actually, I doubt that such a thing is even possible, but...), without enjoying the act of engaging with it intellectually.
