This is glorious music. You may disagree, but be prepared to face my wrath.

I have as much respect for Cage as for any artist, really - easily one of the most creative and original musical minds of the past century. That said... most of the fun of Cage is in the concept, and I'd have a hard time imagining someone being a fan of his on a purely visceral level (actually, I doubt that such a thing is even possible, but...), without enjoying the act of engaging with it intellectually.

i've never listened to a single note of John Cage's work. to me, the quote isn't about Cage. it's about approach. if i say it's art, then it's art.

I like this record a lot:

As for the Zappa quote... well, y'know... that was an old thought when Zappa had it.

Watt isn't in my house spouting misinformation and flinging poo if I don't read his posts.

Same way the video in the OP isn't making me nauseous if I don't click on it.

I did click on it. Sounded like complete rubbish. Reminded me of highschool band when everybody would be warming up doing scales and stuff just to get their instruments warmed up...everybody doing something completely unrelated and non-musical.

Yep, that's pretty much what it sounded like to me.

Try pushing past the intro. You still won't like it, but it gets more accessible.

I doubt it. I really never got into shred guitarists either. Van Halen is about as close to shred as I can get into.

Via, Satriana, and all those Shrapnel Records guys just bore me to tears.

try this instead:

This has about as much to do with shred, Shrapnel, VH, Vai, Satriani, etc., as Stravinsky does.

The main problem for me with the Ornette Coleman piece in the OP..having listened to it again...is that it is boring. The Prof knows that I love some jazz...Art Tatum in particular, who sounds to me like just about the finest musician that ever lived (by my terms of course, and together with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan..and Eddie Van Halen )..but the Coleman piece is dull. It is The Emperor's New Clothes. Harmolodics my ass.

Whatever.

Obviously my ability to enjoy music is nowhere near as advanced as that of you superior beings.

Sorry Prof, but I think you're having the same problem I have when I try and tell people that every note in the solo to "Mean Street" makes sense and has a melodic purpose and all they can hear is "wheedly wheedly whee"...:embarrassed:
