Achtung! Sooooooooooo any of you guys interested in the international sawker cup?

I understand why there is an 'offside' rule...otherwise the teams would just kick the ball downfield every time, and there would be no dribbling and not much strategy.

Still, I think on some of those calls they are rewarding a lazy/tired defender

At top level football those offside calls are often very hard to get right, due to the pace of the game. The best teams will often have some ridiculously quick combination play going on.
Don't really think there's anything wrong with the rule itself to be honest.

You can out run a defender, but not until the ball has been played. Run behind the defense before the final pass has been made, and it's offside (except if in your own half of the pitch).

This.

Say you're the last man and I want to play the ball to you.

I can humph it past the last defender and providing you're onside when I kick the ball, you can lose the defender and pick the ball up 1 on 1 with the keeper.

As previously mentioned, the whole point of the rule is to stop strikers poaching in the box and just massive long balls being humphed up the field.

The main issue with the offside rule is 1. Most Americans don't understand it; and B) Most of the rest of the world will argue over its interpretation on any particular instance in which it's called or not called.
About 1, who cares? No need to dumb down a sport for the 'Mericans. 2., sure, but so are strikes, tags at the plate, catch vs. incompletion, crossing the goal line or first down marker, the list goes on.

I like @Dexter Inferno 's explanation. that is how I understand it. The difficulty with its application at the youth sport level (at least the leagues in which my kids play) is that a kid can be fast on the break and get a lead on the defender, but the ref watched the kick rather than the break, and misses the call after a lead was established. The sidelines judges who should be responsible for the call often aren't confident enough to let the ref know the real call. But despite that problem, the game is better with the rule than without it, IMHO.

Wait a second. So you can not out run or get ahead of a defender without being offsides? That doesn't seem to make sense.

sure you can, once the ball is played. but you can't camp down at the opposing goal and wait for a defender or mid on your team to kick it the length of the field to you. Being required to wait until the ball is played prevents cherry picking. Kind of akin to american football receivers being required to wait until the ball is snapped to run down field. Kind of akin that is.

When I've instructed grade 8 referee clinics, I always said:

"If you are in the attacking half of the field, closer to the goal line than the second-to-last defender, and nearer to the goal-line than the ball: AND THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!!!!

There is no foul until the ball is played forward by a teammate and you gain advantage from being in an offside position by receiving the ball, interfering with play, or interfering with an opponent. That's why you will not infrequently see an attacker, when the ball is played forward, standing still and making no move toward the ball. That is the attacker's way of saying "I'm not involved in play, so my being offside is not an infraction".

That simple enough? Really, it's the only really nuanced aspect of the laws of the game -- the other 17 laws are pretty simple.

Korea played with great character and fortitude today. Sadly, it wasn't enough.
Russia lost, so the Russian salt mines will gain some healthy young recruits courtesy of Vlad. :embarrassed:

If you want to understand offsides better, watch hockey as they line up on the blue line awaiting the puck.

Oh, and enough of the fucking play acting "injuries".

Well the USA played much better after that initial clusterfuck. Better than they did in most of the match against Ghana, in fact.

What a save that was late in the half!
