Congrats wok. I bet you're devastated you don't get to drive drunk imbeciles around anymore, but I hope you'll enjoy your new job nonetheless.

well, got an update today: they have withdrawn the conditional offer as I didn't pass their vetting. No further reason given so I haven't got a clue why...

That's pish man.

yup,

I have an idea of why I didn't pass vetting... about 10 years ago I worked for Scottish Widows, which is now part of Lloyds Banking Group. I walked out of that job one day after one too many insults on the phone... :embarrassed:

That's pretty harsh.

You don't want to buy a wedding DJ bizdo you? :embarrassed:

Apparently it's also because I didnt't pass their credit vetting. Perhaps to do with the fact that I have a credit card debt.

Shite man.

A pal of mine got knocked back from the cops for that too.

Them. Banks and the military see you as a risk to get knobbled if you're in that situation, particularly the banks.

Statistically they're not wrong. It's just a bit shite that they don't inform you clearly about it and give you the chance to deal with it or something. Especially if it's just a credit card debt.

Just to get over the deflated feeling I sent out a few applications and updated my design portfolio as much as I could ( it hadn’t been touched in 5 years). Decided to work on this for the coming weeks

@ColourofFire You are a designer right? You got any tips as to how to create a quality online portfolio? As in, which platform, how to choose from your work and what additional info to provide?

I don't really have a "design" portfolio. I do the design work mostly on the side, so I don't promote it too much. I mostly use my website (http://wtf0.nl/), but that mainly has artistic stuff on it, and a small bit in "other" for webdesign (and just linking made me realise how badly I need to update both the look and content there  ). Most of the design work I do comes from somewhere in my network and word of mouth.

I'd say just make a nice website, use linkedin, do some stuff by yourself and throw it on instagram or something like that. The most important thing is to show your network you're around and doing stuff. If you don't have a network at the moment, just do some things by yourself and see if you can find some local designers that are overloaded with work and ask if you can take some basic project they're not interested in off their hands.

My cousin and his fiance are over from Belfast and were staying with me last night.

Mrs JBJ messed up the key arrangements for them leaving while we're at work so I'm locked out.

I'm now off to the football and in the pub 3 hours early enjoying a fresh lager beer :embarrassed:

Design is a huge field what sort of stuff do you do @wok?

web design, digital design, some graphic design, interactive design. You'd think I would have no trouble finding anything

You're right, you shouldn't. Do what COF said, get a website up showing your stuff, then hit Linked In, Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook. See if there are any online designer groups you can join and network through to find vacancies or get recommended via.

Another thought, ever done any 3D work? As my son has started studying Game Design at University, I have become of aware of the stuff you can do in modelling tools and game engines. May be worth looking at Blender (3D modelling and a lot more), and the Unity and Unreal game engines to expand your skillset. Blender is totally free, the game engines are free to learn, you only pay some royalties if you sell over a certain amount a year (read the T&Cs).

Good luck whatever you do.
