Mental health check-in

Luckily, we had a few containers of Clorox wipes, two bottles of hand sanitizer, a huge refill bottle of liquid hand soap, and an 18 pack of TP before the panic buyers descended upon the stores. I'm no prepper, but like to keep non-perishables stocked up in case of financial or weather emergencies.

We've not previously stocked up on stuff or typically bought in massive quantities but between camping supplies and the cooking I usually do, we had a decently stocked pantry going in. We've been buying the larger quantity packs of TP and paper towels for years just for convenience and the timing of this happened be just a week into a new pack of TP. Obviously if you have a craving for something and it aint in your pantry, you've got to make it or deal with not having it. If you're used to fresh produce, eggs & milk year round but canned veg. powdered milk. and eggs are not the same level of satisfaction in the short term & you've got to adapt to that. Depending on your current food habits, this is a different puzzle to solve for.

But I've really been amazed by just how unprepared all my co-workers, friends & neighbors were going into this were...and continue to be. They're all still making frequent trips to stores and since many items are in low/no supply, they're unable to get out of that cycle of always needing something.

Unfortunately, we were down to the last of our large Costco packs of TP, and were down on wipes. Plenty of soap though. So, we ended up with the sandpaper single ply we could get, and have made do with home made sanitizer and wipes using paper towel and a spray bottle of bleach based general spray cleaner.

My hands are dry. I keep getting splits in my fingers. Partly it is where I live, but normally my hands would not be splitting now, but for all the incessant hand washing I am doing.

I think what's been the most surprising to me is how unwilling people seem to be to adapt/go without particular things. There seems to be very little middle ground between OMG I NEED TO FILL MY BASEMENT WITH EVERY NON-PERISHABLE I MIGHT WANT and needing to go to the store every few days. I suppose you do need to stockpile large quantities of everything if you want to have anything you might want on hand at any point, but you don't NEED to always have any particular foodstuff. You ran out of pasta but you have rice? adapt, make a rice-based dish instead of the pasta dish you were planning to make.

There seems to be very little making do with what you've got.

I've been going through lots of various hand moisturizer to deal with the same issue

I have a co-worker who's family has been blowing through snacks, cookies and general junk food. They're at each other's throats when they run out so he's been running out to the store every couple days.

My shopping hasn't changed much in that i still go once a week (usually a Saturday) the difference is that I've been buying more each week (in order to havce a surplus, not eat more). I'm going to brave Costco this weekend because on some of the "corona lockdown costco haul" youtubes i've seen Costco looks to be well stocked and weirdly civil inside, perhaps due to their limiting number of people inside the store. Problem is that I've only been to Costco once before (my new boss put me on his business account as the second person) so i don 't even know how it works or what the layout is.....should be an adventure. With that trip though I'm hoping to not really have to go for about three weeks.
FWIW my weekly shopping over the past three weeks has been to the little store in the neighb orhood so i feel like at least i'm limiting my exposure in a way.

welcome to my world....as an auto mechanic I'm always washing my hands in "hand cleaner" and when they aren't in that they are in solvent, grease , oil, dirt, getting split open on metal....the key is two have a few different moisturizers (so as not to get mundanely bored) and use good soap when you can (ones that are not all drying out).

It’s pretty rare that I feel grumpy or worry that I’m in a foul mood. But today, I do.

So I’ve mostly just been self-isolating with the dogs or with old movies. Currently enjoying a strong beer. Not sure what I’ll do this evening.

Agreed, that was fun.

Cheers guys, it was a fun thing to do.

Unfortunately I won't be doing it very often for the neighbours sake - next door has a small kid and the other side is a batshit crazy elderly woman who for some reason I'm one of very few people in the street she's not belligerent to but again thanks, I had a good time doing it.

Sorry for the rant.

An elderly neighbour plays dominos in our local pub with a group of his pals every Wednesday night.

Since the lockdown my wife and I have set up an online game so we can play along with him and one of his friends. We have a few drinks and see how everyone is doing.

I hope it was just him overdoing the drink but last night he was a complete nightmare. REALLY out of line with the way he was speaking to his pal bearing in mind you can call someone a cunt in this part of the world as a term of endearment...

I went to the loo and when I came back he was gone - his pal had told him to stfu or leave so the neighbour logged off in a mood. The 3 of us continued and it was actually quite nice though the pal mentions as well as being on the wine, he'd been chatting with the neighbour before the game and he'd been on the vodka.

Neighbour pops back up on the screen half an hour later and wants to join again.

Now there's no talking going on, a frosty atmosphere and when we need to start a new game he can't work out what he's doing - we've done this 4 or 5 weeks now and you click a link then hit a big orange button to begin - he couldn't do this. I spent 3 minutes trying to tell him what to do whilst he ignored me and played on a different game before I gave up, told him he'd be an arse all night and I was done with the game. His pal agreed we should probably call it a day.

Cue a bunch of group chat messages from him: "I'm not drunk, I'm 77 and not as tech savvy as you lot" etc... fwiw he knows his way about a mobile phone better than most people I know.

He has a habit of pissing off me or his pal intermittently by acting like an ass when he's drunk but he's never done it to both of us at the same time.

Sorry I don't even know what the point of the rant was. Just pissed me off, Wednesdays had been a nice wee thing to look forward to and he's ruined it by being a prat.

Memoir title.

You hang in there, jbj. Tomorrow is Friday. Spend the weekend in the hot tub.

I didn't even get in the tub last night due to the stupid game!

I'm fine. Just part pissed off part concerned - it's not uncommon for him to be a grumpy old bastard but he was out there last night and has been ignoring calls from his old army buddies etc. .

It's a weird balance in our house.... I was only "isolated" for 8 days before being called back into work full time.

On top of that, with my wife's weakened immune system, I'm the designated food gatherer/ errand runner.... so she's on week 4 of barely leaving the house (while working almost every day as a teacher), so I'm trying to be cognizant of her situation.... and not be too upset when she keeps me from doing anything in another room from her :annoyed:

Oh... and I started a boy band... http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/threads/what-do-you-guys-think-of-my-little-boy-band.97004/

I had a bad week last week, and think I was unintentionally a prat to my wife when I was really just trying to talk to her about anxiety I was experiencing and how when she had a positive test result, it was stressing me out that she was going around doing house cleaning. But it came out as me being a prat, and I had had nothing to drink. Strange times, and people act badly sometimes. Hopefully he can pull it together, and you all can forgive him, and everyone can move on. Thankfully, it appears that is happening here.

This week has been good. Did some deep cleaning at the house finally. I envy those that are sitting in sparkling clean houses but I'm glad to be working too.
Distance learning went into phase 2 this week. They are lowering the amount of work (time) for the kids but the work is ramping up on the difficulty and detail scale. We'll see how that plays out.
Census is holding steady and we had a really good March financially so I'm actually looking forward to our month end call on Monday.
A few discharges upcoming but we are finally seeing some promising admissions on the horizon.
On the down side, the handle that extends my recliner broke and I have to sit on the other side of the couch to recline and it's not optimal TV viewing. I'm such a tedious bitch. lol.

My kids started distance learning on Monday. They already shut it down. They didn’t require any kind of secure login so apparently in a class somewhere, someone who was not a student logged in and showed his wiener. So now they are scrambling to get some kind of sign in process for the classes.

What are they using for that? Zoom has is set up where you can make students go to a waiting room and you need to admit them manually.
