Mental health check-in

I just got laid off! Yay!

That sucks.

My wife just found out that because of all this, not enough kids signed up for summer school. Guess how she gets paid during the summer? Teaching summer school, so no summer salary for her. Anyone wanna buy a ridiculously expensive house in a horrible place to live?

Hopefully we'll be able to work something out with the mortgage company, but that might be tough since she is technically still employed.

careful with the self-clean cycle - I've yet to meet a self-cleaning oven that didn't eventually damage itself from the high heat (minimally burning out fuses, also had one that burned out a control board that was a spendy replacement)

Cheers for the heads up. We dont use the oven that much so only gets a going over with it every 6-9 months. Plus it's an AEG with a good warranty but will keep it in mind.

I've just worked out how to get the door off too. 18 months of gunk and grease lying in that little nook

That sucks. What does she teach? If it's a core subject is there a chance there'll be a big uptick in kids signing up to catch up with stuff they've missed?

I was pretty sure our schools wouldn't be opening until after the Summer break but the way the press is talking just now, they may be one of the earliest things to open back up.

She’s a college professor. She teaches mostly PhD students

Oh well, on a humorous note - my wife's car was stolen, probably while I was off donating white blood cells. She loves that car (red 2013 Mazda 3 hatchback).

Yesterday was a banner day at casa bsman...
Seriously? That sucks.

Been thinking a bit lately about our household's preparedness for other possible disruptive situations in light of this experience.

Attempting to get through these past several weeks with very limited inbound supplies has changed the way I think about what we should have on hand to weather something like a serious cascadia subduction zone quake. Not going full prep'er or anything but when this settles out, I'd like to be better situated to be entirely self-sustaining for a longer period that 2-3 weeks.

I’ve been keeping a list on all of the stuff I need to stock up on for future shit. Especially since the Epidemiologists are predicting waves of Covid-19 with more shutdowns. I’m cleaning out my basement and making room for the stuff that keeps selling out like pasta, flour, and canned soup, Lysol, cleaning wipes, etc. I need to add storage to my garage so I can stick things that can freeze out there. I’m not going to stockpile MREs, but I don’t want to have to wake up at 5am to get in line for stores to open so I can get a box of macaroni.

I’ve also been keeping a mental list of some of the things I’ve found that we missed & what I’d like to do differently.

Going into this stay at home order, I really didn’t expect that things would turn so drastic so quickly & still haven’t thought about ‘conservation mode’. We were pretty well stocked up going into this but there are some shortcomings. We’ve only had 1 small grocery delivery of food staples, the produce box and some beer delivered/picked up curbside since this started.

Still have like 9 rolls of TP so there’s that going for us.

You can sprinkle baking soda liberally over the bottom of the oven. Then combine a cup of water and a cup of vinegar and pour that on the bottom of the oven. If it is covered, turn the heat on low...about 250 for 10 or 15 minutes. Then let it sit for another 20 minutes. You'll be able to wipe most of it up and some will have to be scrubbed but not hard work at all. No fumes and a beauty clean oven. The foil the bottom of it before you use it again.

Feeling pretty positive today - last few days when it became clear lockdown is going to extend has bummed me out a bit. Got some impending work stuff to do too which I've been told not to touch over the Easter holidays which is cool but I want a bit of guidance with some of it and don't want to bother the boss when she's technically on holiday too.

Just had a nice lunch using leftovers from last night's dinner to make taquitos then I prepped everything for tonights dinner - mexican pulled beef. Smells amazing already.

Got a few jobs to do about the house this afternoon then out weekly online dominos game with our elderly neighbour and his pal. Might get some down time to chill and play XBox when I'm done.

Luckily, we had a few containers of Clorox wipes, two bottles of hand sanitizer, a huge refill bottle of liquid hand soap, and an 18 pack of TP before the panic buyers descended upon the stores. I'm no prepper, but like to keep non-perishables stocked up in case of financial or weather emergencies.

Your DJ set this weekend was good entertainment while working on our own live set for the day after :) Thanks for that.
