Manx Buggy build thread!

We went to a party a couple of weekends ago, and Bobby (the guy that has the blue Manx buggy here) had driven his buggy to the party.

He asked about you. :)

Hey Phil,

If you have any issues let me know and I maybe can help you out. I have built 20-25 buggies and started when i was 12-13. My dad was the area VW guru and always had fast buggies that he built. I had a fiberglass body buggy and a rail both that I built when I was 13 or so. I think we used to have around 150 VW's all at one time in various pieces and stages. We used most of them for parts and pieces. My father owned a wrecker service and service station for 35 years and I bought all of his VW stuff before he sold out and I ended up having a couple more rail buggies and then sold everything I had to a neighbor for about double what I paid for it. Now I wish I had it all back because it would be worth a fortune. Oh well...can't keep everything! I am always willing to answer any questions that you may have, if I can.

Looks like a fun project too!

Oh no way! Thanks man, you'll be a great resource!

My problem now is lack of funds to go all top dollar on it, and engines and transmissions aren't just laying around in people garages like they were a few years ago. That is really going to be the tough part.

Coming along nicely.............good to see you resisted the temptation to get carried away.......see attached picture. This one didn't make it.....but many parts are present in the two that did, including the engine and gear box. The rear axle I have for a spare.

Who was that welding without gloves? Maybe it was just a pose for the picture? Gloves a must, for me. Those rays burn light sunlight......very high UV!

Yeah, gloves are a good idea of course, but we go without on occasion. End up with a bit of a sunburn. :embarrassed:

YAY! I think i found my donor VW!

I'm going to try to pick it up after work today. Stay tuned . . . .

Yeah, its a fully running and registered beetle, which is a bit of a shame to tear it apart. But the good part is, all the little detail bits will be there. Things like seatbelts, seats, the pedal assembly, the gauges, all that stuff that would nickel and dime me to death if i just bought an engine and tranny.

 Very true. I'm going to have to resist the temptation to slap a paint job on it and try and flip it. I could probably make money doing that, but i really need to get the buggy done.

yeah it does. it was all the way up in pamona. i made arrangements for a ride up there and everything, then he just sent a cryptic email and wouldnt return any calls.

craigslist for the loss.

dick sold it locally for more money.

Well, since i am going to wait a little longer for a donor car, i decided to pick up the paint for the body. Man, that stuff is more expensive than i remember! I went with corvette velocity yellow. So it should end up looking similar to this . . .
