Manx Buggy build thread!

With what I know of registering old cars in California thats a pretty cool thing...:)

Oh yeah. That little chunk of metal is worth its weight in gold.

VW's are hard to smog anyway, especially if you modify them, with an off-road exhaust and such. Won't be a problem for me though. :thu:

That is really cool! It takes a lot of equipment to do that kind of stuf. It is great you have access to all of that....

Oh yes, fortunately my place of work has it all available. I have most of thats stuff in storage actually (except the forklift), but apartment life frowns on that sort of thing.

Really whats needed is a die grinder, MIG welder, measuring tape, and a lot of patience.

This was a big hurdle. This is about all the fabricating that needed to be done. Now its pretty much just buying stuff and bolting it on. I do still need to shorten the shifter tube, and all the cables.

After that its just a matter of buying power, so it will be a slow gathering of bits and pieces.

Bump because i'm going to do a bit more work on it this weekend. Plans are to finish welding the pan in a couple spots, clean off surface rust and paint the pan black.

Next will be to figure out a color for the body, paint it, and bolt the two together. :thu:

Damn I hate missing threads... fixed that now though.

That's one helluva project Phil. Very cool.

What about wheels? I guess that's after paint :)

I had a neighbor with one of those years ago. The paint was a heavy heavy metal flake metallic blue, Looked awesome.

Wheels are coming later, yes. im on a really tight budget, so i'm trying to stick with a retro type look. It would be cool to use stock rims on the front, and widened stock ones on the back, paint them and put some baby moons on or something. Kinda like this.

But its really going to come down to what i can find for cheap. I'm amazed at how much things have changed, there used to be VW motors laying around SoCal like dead leaves, now i'll be lucky to find one an any decent shape that wont cost a ton. Finding an engine and transmission is really the challenge. The rest of the stuff i'll be able to scrounge up.

Love that pic... wow that oughta inspire you!

I know what you mean about VW parts. I had a '69. There's a local VW shop and he has all that's left around here and he knows it.

Yeah, i have a feeling i'm gonna have to break down and find one on thesamba.com. I put out feelers and have come up empty so far.

I took a look locally, this is all I could find... doesn't look too good.

Not bad, it would probably be rebuildable. If that was local i'd prolly jump on it. There is a guy local here selling a couple of complete 36 horse motors, but i'd like a bit more than that, they work OK with a buggy cause they are so light, but driving in sand can really bog them down.

Yay, a little more progress today! Needed to finish welding up the pan after shortening it, and wanted to paint it with some rust protectant paint.

Set the body aside, got ready for some welding.

Its at my friends house, here is a shot of a 928 that he inherited to get running, but it needs a lot of work.

Welding . . .

Set it up on its side for some better access.

Did the first coat of paint

Painted it with a few coats . . .and the pan is pretty much done.

Another shot of the body.

So, now i can go two ways. Paint the body, bolt it on, and start wiring it and getting lights and all that stuff, or wait until i get an engine and transmission. I'm thinking its best to just look for a donor baja bug or the like to strip engine, transmission off of, and get seats, gauges, and all that stuff too. Thats probably the most cost effective way to go. Stay tuned!

Great work!! That thing will be a blast when it's all together! Looking forward to updates!

Thanks dude. I'll be sure and update you guys. Its not sitting on my property, so the guy is getting anxious for me to get moving on it, so i guess i had better. hahaha
