After spending some time on youtube yesterday, the play authentic video could be the nail in the coffin for Gibson. The suggested watch panel is filled with people's negative reaction to that video. It seems like when they fired Henry and revamped the line, things were looking up and then the video, and the lawsuits. Gibson needs to realize the way to sell more guitars is not to threaten and sue the competition, it's to make a better guitar at a better price. You build a quality V for $750 and nobody is buying a Dean V.

The reaction has been overwhelmingly negative. I’m not sure how they could have expected anything less. The videos tone was so angry. They would have been better off just quietly suing. The whole film and tv thing was just bizarre. I can’t imagine that Indusry is just up to hook their wagon to Gibson’s horse.

This Gibson thing is horseshit. Deans and Revs and whatnot are not biting Gibson’s market. If Gibson was making a playable, solid instrument under their main badge at less than $1K retail (likely in Korea or Mexico or a tightly controlled shop in China) maybe they could make the case. But the aesthetics are different, the market is different, and this whole thing is a PR disaster. Did this new Gibby CEO get wasted with what’s his nuts from Rickenbacker and decide to do a “hold my beer and watch this?”
It seems like meeting the needs of your intended market is a better path to success. You don’t see Fender out there making a stink about every fake Tele/Strat on the market.

End of the day, you make a good guitar at a fair price and you benefit from historical name recognition, you’ll do all right. Problem is Gibson wants to make a stink selling $3K crap boxes and are upset that they’re being undercut by manufacturers working a different end of the market.

Honestly, I think if they did this, the whole internet outrage thing would go away. The Fender situation seems to have cemented it in players' minds that headstocks are the trademark.
And if Gibson did that, they would end up going after the guitars I think most players agree are counterfeit. Of course, it's probably really, really hard to drag a fake-maker from a country that doesn't care about US intellectual property laws into a federal court in the eastern district of Texas and get a meaningful judgement. So there's that.

Iirc Gibson used to only seem to go after LP copies and the open book headstock copies...they didn’t seem to give a crap about V or explorer copies, both of them have been numerous and highly visible. Edit and same goes with the SG. Plenty of copies have been out there without Gibson really doing much about them for decades
