2019 Concert thread

Saturday night some friends and I saw David Sanborn, Bob James and Marcus Miller on their "Double Vision Revisited" Tour, with amazing vocalist Larry Braggs at the Arena Theater in Houston.

Great show with wonderful musicianship from all involved and a few absolutely stunning moments of vocals by Larry Braggs, including a hair-raising, smile-inducing rendition of "Since I Fell for You" that the late Al Jarreau recorded with Sanborn and James. Bob James is still a legitimately great pianist/keyboardist at 4 mo shy of 80 y/o, with a deft and delicate touch. David Sanborn can still kick it into high gear at 74 and blow the paint off the stage. Marcus Miller was Marcus Miller: an awesome bassist with unlimited groove. Larry Braggs has an amazing voice.

Excellent seats (Row H) in a round theater with a rotating stage, giving everyone a great view of the artists.

The following took place a couple of weeks before ours, but it gives a taste of "Since I Fell for You":

I had a great time at the Heart concert last night. Some of the highlights were covers of Your Move, and Stairway to Heaven. They also did a different take on Alone I really enjoyed. Of course they played their other big hits like Crazy on You, These Dreams, Dog and Butterfly. They closed the show with Barracuda.

Did they play 'What About Love'? One of my favorite Heart moments is when they come in with the loud cymbal on that song. Is that the high hat?

They did play that song, but they changed the arrangement. It was awesome.

They used the gong for Mistral Wind, which was amazing too. I forgot how much of their early music had a prog rock vibe to it.

Saw Chris Isaak last night, always a great show. His guitar player, Hershel Yatovitz, is a fabulous guitar player.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm jealous.

(FWIW, nothing pernicious in that remark. Just that I have seen so many live performances that I almost always got to see whatever I wanted. Apparently, these days, I'd really like to see Chris Isaak. Would really have loved to see him with Wilsey.)

I saw Chris Isaak perform at the California Speedway. My dad had a motorhome spot on the infield. they had Saturday concerts on the infield . he was great. Funny too. He would tell great stories between songs.

We saw Foreigner on Tuesday.
Very “sanitary” vibe.
Almost a bare stage with keys and drums on a wide riser.
All guitars wireless. No pedal boards on stage, not even controllers. No amps on stage.
They could have been using modellers. Everything was controlled by techs at side stage.
One pair of monitor wedges at centre stage, but everyone had in-ears.

It seems like weird stuff to notice at a concert, but the overall vibe made me look for interesting (to me) stuff.
See my thread about the wireless antennas in the On Stage forum.

They played nothing but their hits. With their catalogue, it’s easy to do.
Other than one bit of sour harmony in Urgent and one wrong patch/pedal/setting at the start of a solo, the songs sounded exactly like you’d expect.

Mick Jones wasn’t even there. So, it was all the “new” guys celebrating 40 years of the band. The most senior guy has 25 years of service. They are fantastic at what they do. Great musicians. It’s just a weird, tribute band, sparse stage kind of thing.

I’ve never really been a fan. I’ve seen them once before when they played my company sales conference. Jason Bonham was their drummer and Mick made it on stage for most of the songs.

I'm going to see Boz Scaggs again at The Ryman on Wednesday night. I know that I post this often, but he has relatives in Nashville & plays there often. I try not to miss a show!

Yeah, Boz is still great live. Saw him with the Dukes of September (a 'supergroup' of Boz, Donald Fagen and Michael McDonald) at the Woodlands Pavilion several years ago, and as headliner at a medium sized venue two years ago last June.

The first time I saw Boz was at The Omni in Atlanta in 1972 or '73. That's when you could make your way up front with no problem. I freaked when he came out dressed to the nines. That was when we didn't even own anything nice to wear & wouldn't wear it if we had it. He's a smooth operator.
