In the classic recorded version the bassist doesn't mirror that descending lick. In that seventies version the bassplayer plays that E minor pentatonic descending line at the same time as Link, which (to me) changes the vibe of the song. To me, it makes it more 'Blue Cheer-ish' or a kinda proto-doom vibe, rather than the really switchblade greaser feel of the original.
I like it both ways, but I do prefer the original version better.

I didn't know that about the bass line but I do share a birthday with Link (and the shameless birthday thief Mark Wein) so that's cool.
